So, it is rumored that there will be no time travelling in New Horizons. I am, for the most part, fine with that, as I much prefer to play Animal Crossing normally. However, I have two reasons why this could potentionally become in issue.

Reason #1: I am worried that when Daylight Saving Time ends again in November, that this will cause the time to be an hour off. This may not be a big deal to some people, but this would honestly drive me crazy (and probably others as well). Now, from what I have heard, the Switch is set to audomatically adjust its clock when the time changes. However, I am worried that the game will not be programmed to respond to audomatic time changes.

Reason #2: My other concern is for people who plan to sell/give away/auction villagers, make item and villager shops later on down the road. This sometimes required time traveling in New Leaf. But if time traveling is gone, this will cause transactions to take DAYS, even WEEKS, which can be frustrating for both the runners of these ships, and for their clients.

Don't get me wrong, I am still ESTATIC for this game. But this has been on my mind, and I wanted to get this out there and see if others are worried about this in New Horizons. Maybe get some reassurence. ^^;

your concerns are definitely valid - having my game be an hour off would drive me mad, too. and you’re definitely right about the villagers; if time travel isn’t possible, that’ll likely be the end for trading/selling villagers as it’ll take forever otherwise.

Animal Crossing will always is an offline game, so it will not sync to a Nintendo server clock, but rather the System clock. Daylight savings is calculated based on your timezone and date, so your switch will always have it right. The game will never be off an hour because of this. If you manually set your time, that can fix the time in game if need to, and also be used to time travel.

Fun fact: there is likely a battery on the motherboard of the switch that powers a CMOS clock. This allows the System clock to keep the correct time even if the Switch is turned off or dead. This battery only last 5 years at average (if non-rechargeable). When it does die, your Switch time will always be off, which is where syncing your System clock to the internet helps.

EDIT: While this remains true for PCs, I can't find evidence of such a battery existing on the Switch. I'll have to do some testing with my own to see if I can keep time without internet while the Switch is off or dead.

honestly i feel like threads about time traveling are just fear mongering at this point. literally none of us know anything about it because there's no information on it other than a quote that might have been mistranslated. unless one of us works at nintendo, we won't know anything time traveling until we're told. sure a lot of people may only like this game because they can time travel, but tbh if the only reason they're getting acnh is because they just wanna play without being restricted by real time then i don't think this was ever the game for them, especially with time traveling being threatened. it kinda defeats the "purpose"* of the game, but i do understand getting what you want out of a game with the restrictions placed on it (just look at all the hacked towns in acnl; defeated the "purpose"* but people still did it).
*i say purpose lightly in that this is supposed to be a real time simulation and not playing it as such truly does go against the purpose of it

to get on topic, if time traveling isn't a thing i imagine that they'll implement something to get us on track with daylight savings. doesn't japan have daylight savings as well? and i planned to make a trading shop without the use of time travel. it might take a while but that isn't at all daunting to me. i don't intend to get rich or whatever by my shop, it's just a cute lil thing to have on the side.

I'm just concerned about my busy schedule AND being busy/away on the holidays. I'll have to skip some days because I wake up at 6:45 am for uni class (I commute) and get back at 2 but have to study....by 6 the shops are close iirc. At that point it just becomes unfun.

re-tail closed at 11 pm. t&t emporium closed at 9 pm. nook's home closed at 8 pm. the museum never closes. the island never closes. there was a night owl ordinance.

idk i always try to make time for animal crossing so it's a part of my schedule. i understand everyone has different lives; i'm not saying time travel is terrible and it should never be in the game. i like time travel and even utilize it myself, but if not being able to time travel is unfun then there's a very real possibility that acnh will be the most boring and tedious animal crossing game you'll play. but we literally know nothing so it's better to just not stress out over this.

Oh okay, I didn't remember those closing times correctly. I guess you're right. Let's wait and see!

i just wanted to clarify that i wasn't trying to be rude but i feel like i came across like that!! i did get a bit heated because this topic just comes up so often. you're concerns are valid and i'd be a liar if i said i haven't ever thought about these things, but it's just one of the most common talked about things in other corners of the community and it's a bit saddening when it comes with all negative discussion. i hope time travel is a thing for exact situations such as yours, and honestly the more i think about the more likely it'll still exist because it truly is a staple of the game, even if it may have been unintended.

i look back with regret saying that those who play the game just time traveling constantly aren't really playing the game for its intended purpose because honestly the purpose of the game is just to be relaxing. while it may not have been the animal crossing series' intended play style, it's still one that has developed and i think it would be in acnh's best interest to try to accommodate it as well. this game is a fun and positive experience, and i feel like everyone should be able to enjoy it how they want. i was just a bit irritated at time during my previous comments and i wish i didn't let it get to me. i realize now that i'm apart of the negative discussion that comes with this topic oop-

Hey, it's no biggie :) I didn't take it to heart and I totally understand where you were coming from. It's easy to get heated with discussions like these.

It is supposed to be relaxing.

There are also people who cannot "make time" for Animal Crossing in their daily schedule in a way that fits those shops in. Some people might miss days regardless of if they personally feel comfortable doing so or not. Some people do not want to only see their islands during the nighttime. That would be depressing.

For example, I am a full time student and nearly full time worker in a field that entails constant meetings/debriefings/reports and working under intense time limits to solve very intense issues that arise. This can easily take well into the night. And then I get up at 0500 the next day to rinse and repeat. Just because I can't manage to find a moment in the daylight to pull out my gaming system and say "hold on, guys, I know this issue is mission critical, but I want to play my video game when I can still see the way my town looks in the daylight" doesn't mean that I shouldn't be able to ever see it that way at all.

It's an independent, one-player game. Many people play it without having any intention of going on forums to sell or buy or trade. Many people play it in their own privacy and at their own pace. Why should they be restricted when it's supposed to be a relaxing, independent game in which you play to your preferences?

Cheating is an issue. That's not up for debate, and that's not what I am arguing. And I'm sure there are many other ways to prevent it. That'd be great if they did. But it would be pathetic if they took away time travel, and therefore decided that the game wasn't for "everyone", but for solely the percentage of appreciators who have less insane schedules who are able to take the time to play it whenever they feel like it.

I don't think that it's anybody else's business how one person plays a game when it doesn't effect anyone else but their own experience. If you don't like time travel, and you're either available during the day to play it or are fine with only ever seeing the night and missing out on fun little events, then that's great. Don't use it. But please don't go so far to extend your own opinions towards others and say that because I go back a few hours every night to listen to the 10 AM music and water my flowers in the daylight, I am not "playing it like I'm supposed to". Animal Crossing is definitely and indisputably the game "for me". And it's still the game "for" all other other people who have similar situations too.
