Day 33 :D! Time for my second review. This time, it's Mario Sports Mix. I'll review the game based on the four sports included in it as well as extras. Let's do this!
Mario Sports Mix
The wonderful Mario Sports series is back! This time, instead of one sport, it's four! Too good to be true? Nope! The game manages to put four games in one and make it a TON of fun. The four games included in this set are dodgeball, hockey, volleyball, and basketball. I will talk about them in order from least favorite to favorite (but keep in mind they're all good!)
Volleyball
Mario's take on volleyball works just the same as any other volleyball game. The server throws the ball in the air, hits it, and then people continue volleying it until it hits the ground. You can pull off combos, use moves, and block shots as you wish! It's very easy to play. To hit the ball and jump, flick the Wii Remote. To throw an item, press B. To move, use the analog stick on the nunchuck. To use your special attack, hit A and B at the same time. It's pretty straight forward.. You can even set auto jump to completely remove that burden if you wish! The reason it's my least favorite game is because it's repetitive. It's the same old hit, volley, repeat throughout the whole game... And you have to get 15 points! Takes awhile, that's for sure.
Hockey
Again, hockey works like regular hockey does. Get the puck (which is a coin, by the way) in a faceoff, then pass it while skating around, then hit it in the goal. It's pretty easy to play as well... Use the analog stick to move, press A to pass, flick the Wii Remote to shoot (and fight) and press A to steal when you're on defense. You play two rounds, then the game is over. Who ever has the highest score wins, obviously. I like this game, but it's not as good as the next two. Plus, it's pretty easy.
Basketball
Here we go, these two games are the cream of the crop in this collection. Basketball is one of my favorite games. To play, you just have to move with the analog stick and shake the wiimote to shoot. You can perform slam dunks, three pointers, and special attacks. You can press B to throw items, and A + B for special attacks. There are more advanced moves you can learn, but they take no time to master. This game, though it's really easy, is a ton of fun to play! Hilarity is ensured if you have more than one person. Not to mention seeing your miis do huge slam dunks, nothing beats it!
Dodgeball
Finally we have dodgeball. This is, in my opinion, the BEST game on the set by far. It's not too easy, it's not boring and repetitive, and it's a ton of fun! To play, you shake the wiimote to throw the ball, move the analog stick to move your character, press A + B to catch balls (and use your special attack) and press A to pass. There are a few more advanced techniques, but that's all you really need to play. It's fun, fast paced, and really funny! Again, use miis for hilarity to ensure!
Extras
This game is full of modes! Exhibition lets you play a single game with up to four players, tournament lets you play many matches in a row to unlock new characters and maps, and party mode lets you play a mini game (one per sport) There's many things to unlock (alternate costumes, characters, maps) so its almost impossible to become bored. This game still keeps me very much entertained.
Conclusion
With four well done, and quite fun, sports, many extras, and a ton of replayability, this game is certainly a good one. Many reviewing sites gave this game a moderately low rating, but I say ignore them. I had a ton of fun playing Mario Sports Mix, and I'm sure you all will too. I give this game: 8/10. It's a blast to play, but there's a lot that it could have to improve it more.
Well that's it for today. Tune in tomorrow for another blog entry, and tune in next week for another review! I'm not going to spotlight any games anymore because I change my mind about what game I'll review at the last second, so meh. And sorry I cut to the chase a lot... I could talk in much more detail, but I chose to shorten it a bit. Nobody here would want to read too much, right? Haha, anyway, seeya!
Question of the day: Has this review influenced you in any way to want this game?
