From what I gathered, the "void" still exists in NH, except it's way less predictable, and easier to get random move ins when visiting/trading. I would be interested to hear people's experiences with unwanted villagers they got from other Islands, specifically the circumstances so we can gather a clearer picture of how it works.

Some specific questions I'd like to know are..

  • If you visit a friend who has a villager moving out, but is NOT in boxes yet (so, the day before they're in boxes), would they still be added to the void? therefore, a risk?
  • Can the Void be cleared in any way? or make it safe somehow?
  • Are they stuck in the Void forever until picked up by someone?
  • If you got someone moving out from your own island, would a random move in appear as soon as your plot is free the next day?

1. I have no idea about this one, but I assume you're safe since they haven't left yet. I'll let someone else answer this one.

2. With my experience, no, your void cannot be cleared. Villagers will also stack in your void. I had visited people multiple times (who had a full island of villagers), then I visited my bf, he began getting my voided villagers. Four of them in a row, I might add. The fifth one (Diana) he got from me resulted in the "I've moved out." glitch. He did manage to free up her plot with a lot of TTing though.

3. It seems to be that way in my experience, yes. They will remain in your void unless picked up by someone.

4. This has not happened to me. However if you have a free plot and then visit another island or have someone visit you, the plot can be taken that very day.

For your #4 I will mention, typically the plot will remain UNLESS you are TTing and you go backwards in time. This happened to me, going backwards in time aka to my current real-time day and I received Norma from someones void. She even told me which town she was from.

Omg! Voided villagers STACK?!? that's insane, and extremely scary. Does that mean someone who trades with a lot of people will suddenly have a huge pool of void villagers from other towns ready to move in? That's crazy to me.
Were you visiting your boyfriend often? or it was for sure one trip and he got ALL of your voided villagers at once?

Does that mean your plot is safe for at least one day? Was thinking of going on mystery islands tomorrow since one of mine is in boxes today; thing is, I visited someone who had someone moving out (not in boxes yet), so I'm slightly paranoid I got tainted.

1. They're not even in the void if they're still in boxes. The void is them having left the island, boxed villagers don't move unless asked.

2. In New Leaf you got rid of your void by visiting a town with 10 villagers. Might be the same in New Horizons, might not be.

3. If you visit someone with 10 villagers, it'll clear your entire void. The void consists of all villagers that left until that point.

4. You have to invite the 10th villager in, if you're not at 9 it'll either be a void villager (if you traveled, if not random) or an invite.

If you're at 8 or less villagers, a random villager will buy the plot the next day after it was completely left.

Yes, I visited him often. I had visited him multiple times prior to him buying the plots. I did not visit him in-between the four plots he put down (he was helping me find Raymond, so I wanted to make sure he didn't get any of my voided villagers...rip, that didn't work out). So his void was essentially stacked up with my voided villagers and they began filling out his plots as he TT'd forward. Again, I did not visit him in-between him putting down plots - they seem to stack up in the void depending on how many times you visit. :\

If you haven't seen it already, this document on a glitch involving voided villagers may interest you.

The thing is that, I'm not sure anyone knows what's a bug and what's a feature. Obviously, the ghost villagers involved with the glitch are, well, a glitch. But I don't think we know if the lack of void clearing is supposed to be a thing, if villagers stacking is supposed to be a thing, etc. So it's hard to say what's different from NL because it's so glitchy and unpredictable.

The void is just ridiculous to begin with, why does it exist! I got stuck with a friend's villager that recently moved out and KNEW the void was still there from NL. It's a stupid feature and makes me not want to go to other people's towns :(

I should also mention that the friend I got her from TTs alllll the time and I'm pretty sure it had been a couple of days within the game since she moved and I STILL got her

To add onto this, I voided Diana, then I had TT'd months in-game (one day at a time) to try to get Raymond via campsite, and my bf still managed to get her after he visited me to pick up some recipes. :|

if im misunderstanding then please correct me but are yall saying you can get another player's voided villagers from online play?? has that always been a thing?

Yes and yes! Except it's a bit more of a worry in NH, since they can glitch your empty plot in many ways.

yes this has always been a thing, except it seems you can't clear your void unlike other previous games

WOW i never knew that. I thought it was only Local play. I only ever got voided villagers from there, but then again I hardly did any online in NL and I don't remember getting any voided villagers from there x'D thanks for answering my silly question

I voided Dobie purely because I only had an hour to get Tom so I didn't have time to 1) say no and try to get someone else to move out or 2) give him to another person. Does this mean the next person to visit my town will get him? Or is it the next town I visit? Agnes was also voided so will they get Agnes before Dobie? This is all so intriguing to me

So this is where it gets a bit weird; but basically, whoever you next interact with online might get both Dobie and Agnes in their "villager pool", but also some people have reported they've passed on the same voided villager to two different players.

Here is my most interesting experience...

My brother had Diva in his town, and he voided her. She showed up in my town, I TTed and sent her to the void as well... In this time, my brother gained one villager, voided another. His next random move in was Diva again.

I thought you weren't able to get the same villager that quickly??

When Kevin moved out of my town I saw him as the first island visitor the next day on a NMT island.

This probably isn't related to the glitches of the V O I D. It's just a thing where the 16 villager cycle doesn't seem to exist in this game like in does in NL, so you can always invite back villagers you've had/get them as RNG move-ins regardless of when they moved out. It's possible your Diva was just passed back and forth through the void, but she should mention your towns as she's moving in if that's the case.

I say "probably," because I have no idea what this game is supposed to be doing. : P
