How exactly do commissions work when the drawing is completed? Is it as simple as uploading the picture to a post in the thread? I always thought that people wouldn't want a piece they purchased on display since it is very easy for anyone else to copy and paste the image for free. Though, I suppose it would be difficult to drum up business if an artist wasn't allowed to showcase previous works.

I'm sorry if this isn't the right spot for this thread. In my defense, I tried searching for my answers with the search tool, but the results only came up with threads for art shops, galleries and commissions; not questions about them.

Usually the artist just posts the piece in the thread once they're finished. They might make a new post or simply change the title to "Pickup: ____" and leave it in a spoiler in the first post. Thankfully nearly everyone who commissions art on here is good about not stealing and whatnot. It's mainly because everyone knows the OCs of these people so it would be very hard to claim the character as their own (I am one of these people lol).

Alternatively, you can send the image in a private message so only the commissioner can see the finished piece.

If you are thinking of opening up commissions for IGB or TBT, then I look forward to commissioning you! :)

Thanks for your help. I was fairly certain posting the image was fine for most people. Using the spoiler tag is a genius idea. I wouldn't have thought to use it myself and then my posts would be a mile long.

I'll probably start a freebie thread in the next few days. I draw traditionally, but I'm not happy with how my phone's camera takes photos. Without the flash, the pictures are so dim and the colours aren't as bright. With the flash, the colour gets totally overpowered by the light and a glossy sheen shows up where I've blended two or more colours together. Perhaps I need to find a brighter room in the house or better light bulbs! :p

What Pokemanz said is pretty much spot on. However sometimes artists might choose to watermark their finished work with the commissioner's name and upload that one, but send the commissioner the version without the watermark to prevent other people from taking the work

I guess my next question is for anyone who has posted traditional art on the forum. How do you photograph your work? My avatar was taken with my camera's phone and the colours are bleeeehhhh, but that might be from the compression to get it to 100x100 pixels.

This too. Watermarking is mainly used to prevent theft of the artist's examples based on what I've seen.

Most traditional artists scan their work I believe. I know some like to photograph it because it looks better, though I wouldn't know exactly how they get it looking nice. :p

It doesn't look nice, even when scanned. You'll need to modify the scanned image/photo with a photo editing program to get it looking nice and 'crisp'.

ill add to what the others said ;w;
like pokemanz said, the art part of tbt is very small so (for me at least) i can recognise someone's oc just by looking at it, so it would be pretty pointless to steal it here.
adopts however, should be watermarked as people can steal them.
however, on a big art site like da, you could sadly get away with character theft since its such a huge site.
most people stick a signature in the actual art, so it cant really be edited out without looking weird

as for traditional art, a lot of people take photos and then adjust it on a program such as photoshop to make it look nice!
a lot of people put there materials in photos! larienne on da's art is a good example c:

you should play around with effects until you are happy with it! good luck with your art c:

So many really good pointers! Thanks for all your help, guys! I fell in love with this board when I discovered it a few days ago and was watching the galleries as a guest before taking the plunge and registering! I can't wait to start contributing with some freebies. Maybe I'll even create an OC. ^.^

I found my digital camera (no more horrid photos from my phone, yay!) so that will help loads with posting drawings. Again, you guys are the best. Thank you.
