I figured it out
I now know what it was reminding me of

The world looks like it was made out of plasticine

(not in a done-badly way, the art style is really nice! but in a "everything looks pliable" way)

The same thing happened with The Sims 4, as it looked a lot more 'plastic' and was kind of a controversial style choice compared the the Sims 3. I like it a lot tho, it's grown on me and NH honestly looks amazing!!

It reminds me of a play set of slyvanian families, or like playmobil. Kind of like we’re playing a giant dollhouse/island. I love the graphics though. I had an issue with the plastic looking feel at first but seeing the world in the different seasons, weather conditions, and lighting just makes everything look so beautiful. It’s not too simple, and not too textured. I feel like that’s the kind of graphics we would expect from a switch game anyways.

I agree and have had similar thoughts.
It’s neither great nor bad to me though—just a style that isn’t my favorite but also won’t impact my enjoyment of the game one bit.

I love it to be honest. There's a minimalistic feel to the menus and speech bubbles that I love. The animals and island are weird... a lot of the textures aren't much more sparse than they were in NL, they're just more HD. Since they're HD, they sorta lacking because they're so plain?

It's weird.

I do like the look though. I feel like going more realistic would be strange looking, while going more cartoony and outlandish would disrupt the relaxing nature.

The Sims 4's graphics are incredibly poor in comparison to Animal Crossing New Horizons, though. The Sims 4 is what happens when a team that has no idea how to do cartoony graphics tries to do cartoony graphics. In the end, The Sims 4 looks like a PS2/GCN era in places, except with poorer quality, washed out textures.

In comparison, Animal Crossing New Horizons is beautiful and has a lot of detail.

this. everything looks shiny and plastic and honestly i’m not super mad at it - it’s a pretty big change from the style of the previous games, however.

I know a lot of people were complaining about the graphics when the first gameplay trailer showed up. I have really liked it this whole time, but I'm curious if anyone has changed their mind.

Totally agree with the comment about them looking like Sylvanian Families! I love looking at how soft they look, the furred characters definitely look very fuzzy and "flocked". I really love the way the art style looks, although when I first saw it, I was kinda like "oh well that's new" lol

Yep. Play Doh.

I think they've learnt from New Leaf about it not looking too clean (side-eyeing you, LGTTC and Pocket Camp): there's textures and shading and fuzziness, a kind of evolution of New Leaf's art style that's definitely similar but also completely different.

i was worried about the textures when early gameplay started getting shown, but now that we get to see more complex towns i'm not at all worried about how the game looks.

the textures for certain items really pop. you can clearly tell what materials something is supposed to be, not to mention the level of detail on the models themselves (especially furniture and certain interiors like the museum) look incredible to me. i know it's a shock having the game look like this now but when new leaf was revealed a lot of the community was a bit split on the graphics. but hey, we got used to them pretty quickly and when new leaf was in its heyday i barely saw any complaints about it because we were having so much fun with the game.

for me it's just the right mix of cartoony and semi realism. i understand how new horizons could not be up to everyone's tastes though.

i must say i was on the fence about the art style when i first saw it, but looking at it more and more i like it. i generally like more cartoony styles and this gradually became right up my alley once i got over how weirdly realistic but also not realistic the trees and stuff looked. it seems much more detailed than acnl, but in a minimalistic way like the game's uis and such. like you won't always see the grass shapes, you won't always see the fuzzy grass effect everywhere only off in the distance. i'm excited to see what it'll look like when i actually have the game instead of just looking at it on a phone or computer.

I wasn't sure about it back during June when they showed off things for E3. But the art style has really grown on me since then. I think it looks good.

Honestly, I love the art style. I see people relating it to the Sims 4 & honestly I loved that art style too. But I can see why some don't like it though.
