So I just started wondering: if I were to change my regional settings on my Switch from north to south hemisphere, without changing the date and time settings, could I hunt and fish for those critters that would spawn during that time frame that wouldn't show up if I stayed north? Example: fireflies spawn in June in the northern hemisphere and December in the southern hemisphere.

I dunno, I haven't been playing very long so I've no clue if this is a novel thought. Has this occurred to anyone else, and if so did you test it out? How did it go if you did?

I’ve never tried it, but you would most likely need to adjust the actual time. If there were a loophole, surely someone would have discovered it very early on. You could visit someone else’s island to fish on their Southern Hemisphere.

I'm gonna say no. The hemisphere you play in is saved to your save file, and chosen manually by the player at the start of the game. It's in no way tied to the Switch region settings. You can however adjust the current date on your Switch to align with the time frame needed for specific bugs/fish.
