May Your Farewells Be Only Finite

The night was warm. Still. The curious, ember glows of iron-wrought lanterns peered closely at two strangers walking along the path, their interest piqued by the loud silences they left in their wake. Sundrop leaves dappled with crimson hung as a canopy overhead, an arched shield that obscured the too-vivid brilliance of the sheer night sky. They discussed what they were going to do with their lives from here on out, oblivious to the stars that splattered in a silver web above them. She wondered what made life worth living, and he wondered why life even existed. The path was silent, listening.

There was something mystical about that night, as their footsteps padded softly along the shimmering pathway. At the end of the tunnel, far ahead, throbbed a luminous, azure light, an opalescent sky of colors gliding across the leaves. Two silent, separate shadows walked beside the lone couple, casting ghostly imprints of themselves upon darkened branches. Despite the haunting presence of the light up ahead, brightly ominous, they didn?t need to worry. The end of the tunnel was still miles away.

He said something. She laughed.

Perhaps the lanterns, watchers who had seen many nights like this before, swelled with a brighter glow so that he could clearly see her radiant, shining face in that exact moment. Perhaps the trees leaned in closer to block the stars? leering view from above. And, as they shifted, one incarnadine leaf fell, like a murmur, onto her golden head. Perhaps it was just him all along, dazzled by her smile and the starry dimples that indented constellations on her cheeks. Perhaps.

Words were simple to them, fleeting. It wasn?t the words themselves that made it so surreal...no, they were mundane, used too often in everyday conversation. It was the way they said them, the way he looked at her, that compelled the world to hold its breath.

They grew quieter as they reached the end of the tunnel. Wearied lamps led them to the exit as fiery colors faded to blue-green. Leaves, once bright, were now devoid of their previously bold burst of colors. He longed to look at her once more, but the cursed light blurred his vision. He already knew that she wasn?t looking at him. She was different than him, more goddess than human, and it was easy for her to walk into such burning light. But he, a creature who often hid in the dark, found it hard to even blink in such intensity.

A chill flew over them, singing past the leaves, and the trees withdrew. The once-warm atmosphere grew cold, somber. He shivered. A ghost of a tear trailed in an icy arc down his cheek, yet when his numb fingertips touched it in muted shock, he didn?t feel a thing. The bright reflections of the lamps, once flourished like a gossamer wedding trail before them, had dulled into a diminished gray. Their smiles were gone.

They said their quiet farewells, then left to go about their lives. It had ended too quickly, transient, sweet.

As the path looked on, sadly, their shadows soon disappeared from sight.
