I'd say my favorite is Unlovable by Dan Yaccarino. It's a children's book about a pug who makes a friend from behind a fence. He pretends he's a golden retriever because he thinks he's ugly. When they finally meet, it turns out they're both pugs! It's very cute and also lacks in the genre-defining doggie death.
