Hi, I really like Animal Crossing, but I have no idea what I’m doing with New Horizons.

I’ve played older games where creating another player file is as easy as opening up the game and choosing “new resident” on the menu screen. My husband was dying to get New Horizons, so we preordered and he played it all night long. I was also looking forward to getting back into AC! Knowing that he’d sleep in today, I woke up early to get a little bit of my own gaming in— I thought I’d just make a file and get past some of the tutorial stuff. But I can’t figure out what to do!

I tried launching NH using my own Nintendo account, but it says that I can’t play the software. There’s no way Nintendo is expecting a family of four to pay over $200 for each person to play... right?

So I tried launching it from his account, thinking that maybe I could just choose “new resident” once his page popped up. Not so. Nook launched into a super long announcement about all the new features on the island, and it just opened his save file instead of offering a “new resident” option (I’ll have to summarize Nook’s spiel for my husband once he’s awake... and apologize lol).

So what am I doing wrong? I’ve read online that multiplayer is available for NH, but I just cannot figure it out. I know there must be a simple solution and that I’m just a dummy :p

Anyway, thank you for your help! I’m hoping to get an answer before my husband wakes up, but that’s not as important as getting to play the game eventually! :D

Hi! In order to use another character, you need to switch your Nintendo Switch profile. You can create another one in the settings menu of your nintendo switch, under the "Users" section. If you relaunch the game as a new profile, it will allow you to create a new character.

Thanks for the help, but it was not as simple as this. I did find the solution, though!

It turned out, my husband's Nintendo account was not attached to our Switch as its primary console. Since we did not have the same primary console, I couldn't play any games that he had purchased and vice-versa. After changing his primary console to our Switch, I was able to play as normal.

I hope this helps somebody else having the same problem! :)
