Am I the only one who will miss having the Wii U Gamepad?

I actually really enjoyed having the Wii U Gamepad, especially for my Zelda games. You have the map and item select menu on the little screen, so you don't have to pause to switch items or find where you're going. It's a feature I wished would have continued on to Breath of the Wild. I also always used the little screen while playing other games like Mario Kart 8 and Super Mario 3D World. I'm just really going to miss having a little screen :(

Does anybody else feel this way?

I enjoy the Wii U gamepad too
I'm currently playing Wind Waker and it's so convenient being able to have the map/items so easily accessible. I honestly don't think I'm going to bother buying the Nintendo Switch because I'm so happy with my Wii u and, having only gotten it recently, still have many games to play through
I love my lil screen

I thought the new companion in Breath of The Wild is the Shiekah Slate (which is basically meant to be the Nintendo Switch)? Have they announced they're ditching the Gamepad? I was gonna buy a Wii U just to play Breath of The Wild but that's a bit of a bummer :(

But anyway yea, I don't own a Wii U so I can't really say..;;

I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way ^_^ I always hear people saying how worthless and dumb that little screen is, but I don't understand those people :( How was it so awful? Lol, maybe they don't like convenience :p

Not sure if you're familiar with the Switch's design, but no, it doesn't have a gamepad. It does have a screen, but while it's on the dock, it is unusable. It's only there for when you are playing it as a portable console, and therefore it is your main screen :(

I liked the gamepad, it just felt like most of the time developers didn't know what to do with it, though the DS/3DS had that problem a lot too. I don't mind it just being a dedicated map/inventory screen most of the time, it was convenient, but it's a shame there wasn't many games that used it for more than that...Or the camera, or gyro controls, or I guess even the mic that I've only ever seen be used in Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate.

...Speaking of features no game seems to actually use, how many games actually use the mics and cameras on these things? I can think of like 3, and one is Yoshi Touch & Go, a glorified tech demo for the DS that almost had to use the mic because it was a tech demo...

Regardless, I would rather have the second screen, even if it's just a glorified map screen.

But-but, you wouldn't drive a car whilst on the phone!

But sarcasm and Nintendo's awful excuses aside, it really bummed me out when they announced they took those features out of the Wii U version of BotW. My copy of TP:HD is still in the wrapper, but the gamepad support was possibly my favorite change to WW:HD...Even in OoT/MM, I preferred the touchscreen inventories so much more than using conventional menu screens.

Oh I mean't the Wii U! I thought you meant they were just getting rid of it for BOTW welp;;. I never had a Wii U (because it was too expensive and still is) and since it didn't do well at all I didn't really bother. I know the Switch is portable, just thought you'd be able to use at the same time especially as Breath of The Wild has been the main source of hype for the console it'd be cool to use it as 'the companion' x.x

Ohhh, well yeah, that feature isn't in the Wii U version either. The Wii U version is the same as the Switch one in terms of gameplay, etc. Just different quality in resolution.

Man, that sucks.. :( that would've been a cool feature and I'm slightly disappointed they ditched certain aspects of the Wii U.

I'd love to know why? It's a perspective I never understood, so I'd like to know the reasons why someone would hate it that much.

I prefer the pro controller in terms of the wii u. I like that kind of controller. I hated how the gamepad needed to be charged, and was necessary for a lot of functions. I just found myself forgetting the charger at home only for it to die at a friend's house. Plus it didn't feel all that comfortable in my hands.

The gamepad was fantastic when developers knew what to do with it. For example, Pikmin 3 plays like a dream. Tokyo Mirage Sessions also used the gamepad really effectively. When it wasn't used well or just not used at all, it just felt like a comically large controller. Overall, though, I like it. It's comfortable to hold and use even when it's just a comically large controller. My main gripe with it is how often the battery needs to be charged.

Ahhh ok. I guess I do understand not liking it as the main controller. Thanks for answering ^_^

Is it weird that I never found the battery life to be that much of a problem? I think it lasted 2 hours off the charger. That was good enough for me. Plus the charger had a long reach and I had a plug close to the couch I just have it permanently plugged into so it was easy to just charge it when the light turned red.

The worst decision Nintendo really need to get out of the habit of making is giving up on consoles. Updates are there for a reason. Follow Apple's example and upgrade your consoles without the necessity to buy whole new devices, and follow PC gaming's example by updating your games (which I think Nintendo are slowly getting the hang of).

I'll be keeping my Wii U. Won't bother with the Switch. I just hope they don't scrap the 3DS.

I hate my gamepad because the screen on it got messed up very easily, and sometimes it doesn't even respond. When you tap on a certain part of the screen the stylus pointer on the screen goes crazy. Most of the time, when I turn the system on and press A to open my account, it literally does nothing. It's like the gamepad is dead, but obviously not because it's turned on.

I sometimes wonder if my gamepad has a mind of its own, and really hates me because I'd rather play the N64 than the Wii U.

The Wii U GamePad itself is a perfectly fine controller for me. It's so comfortable I can play with it for longer than a couple of hours. I also like being able to play most Wii U games without needing a single TV screen, provided that the actual console is plugged on a wall outlet. And that's pretty much where the positives end, because the execution of this concept made the controller more like a dead weight than anything.

The controller represents a huge missed opportunity. There's an overwhelming amount of games that didn't the unique capabilities of the controller relevant, and the games that do are few and far between with varying degrees of success. I felt like that the developers (including Nintendo!!) didn't knew what to do with the Wii U GamePad and they mostly threw inventory-management and Off-TV Play as a result, something that the DS and 3DS models could already do.

Should your GamePad ever break, you'll be in for quite a lot of annoyance. You'll lose access to some games that require using the controller and System Settings can't be navigated at all with any other peripheral. Getting the GamePad repaired/replaced is going to be tough and expensive. It's impossible to find that controller being sold separately, and even importing one from Japan won't work because the GamePad is region-locked for some reason. You'll need to buy another Wii U just to get another controller, which will have you shell out at least $200 USD. And even if you can afford it, it's only going to increasingly difficult to obtain a Wii U from now on, thanks to the production being recently stopped.

In retrospect, I'm not fond of the Wii U GamePad as whole. It's not a terrible controller per se, but the execution in general was so disappointing the controller ended up being more detrimental than it worth in the long run.

My biggest problem with the Gamepad was inconsistency. Some games would force player 1 to use the Gamepad while other games let player one have the choice of a Wii Pro Controller. This was frustrating when playing Mario and Sonic at the Sochi Olympics because the Gamepad had a major disadvantage over the Wii controller and Pro Controller in certain games. If the Gamepad broke that would also mean spending around $100 to get a new one. I did enjoy using the Gamepad for certain games like Wind Waker HD and it let me play it when someone else was using the TV. It has its up and downs, but overall I prefer a system not built around a master controller.
