An age-old dilemna: You are now in charge of a trolley

my personal favourite moral dilemma is the one where 20 ppl are walking in a cove and a fat woman gets stuck in the entrance thereby blocking it. the tide is rising and they will all drown in the cove if they dont get out. luckily one of the ppl has a stick of dynamite, so is it morally justified to blow up the woman to save the other 19 ppl??

it's debatable but the mob mentality would make it happen anyway

No I wouldn't. If I did, I would be responsible for the death of one person but if I didn't, the death of the other 5 would be an accident. I just wouldn't take any direct action leading to the death of a (for all I know) innocent person, even if it would save more people because I don't think it's right to interfere like that.

If the fat guy was attacking the other 5 and I could push a trolly on him to stop him, it would be a different story however.

This is always the form of the trolley problem I've seen:

The general form of the problem is this: There is a runaway trolley barreling down the railway tracks. Ahead, on the tracks, there are five people tied up and unable to move. The trolley is headed straight for them. You are standing some distance off in the train yard, next to a lever. If you pull this lever, the trolley will switch to a different set of tracks. However, you notice that there is one person on the side track. You have two options: (1) Do nothing, and the trolley kills the five people on the main track. (2) Pull the lever, diverting the trolley onto the side track where it will kill one person. Which is the correct choice?

It's much more plausible than pushing a fat guy in front of a trolley to stop it lol.

You need to get dig dug

Assuming that the trolley is a deadly predator capable of killing five people, I would push the fat man in front of it. The trolley would be distracted by the feeding opportunity, and everyone else could just walk away and pretend it never happened.

I've heard it with that version and then the one where you can push the fat guy onto the track to stop the trolley. More people say that they would pull the level in order to save 5 people but kill one than would actually push someone to their death to save the same number of people.

not surprising, pulling the lever is more detached than physically pushing someone to their death

Is the moral of all these stories not to be the morbidly obese person that ruins it for everyone?

It actually can be an indicator of psychopathic tendencies according the video I watched, as a psychopath or someone that does not feel normal emotions or empathy will not be able to differentiate the two scenarios to the extent that others do. They see both as saving five people and killing one vs saving one person and killing five and having to more directly kill a person does not factor into their decision.

Survival of the Fittest, bruh.
