Countless Violet Clouds
Considering the first Bug-Off of the year is today, I thought I'd give those who'd like some a little friendly advice.
For those who don't know, the rules of the Bug-Off are simple:
The Bug-Off occurs on the 3rd Saturday of the month from June to September.
You bring Nate the Chameleon a bug between 9am and 6pm. He will keep this bug and grade it based on species, size, and color.
If you break the current record, Nate gives you a random item as a prize.
If your record breaking bug gets 80 or more points, you get a Bug Series item as your prize.
The contest ends at 6pm and the top 3 will receive a trophy either at the ceremony or in the mail the next day.
All right. Now for the tips.
*A bug's species has a base score that is multiplied positively or negatively by the size and color of the bug you give him that are graded as Bad(-), Normal(0), or Good(+).
-Size is decided and shown to you when you catch the bug.
-Color is 100% completely random. This is determined ONLY when Nate is given the bug. I.E. you can save before you give Nate the bug and after being graded power off and then give Nate the same bug and he may give it a different rating for color.
*The easiest species for 80+ scores are the beetles found on the palm trees at the beach and on the island.
*TT-ing backwards any amount of time will reset the current top score to another character(villagers never break 80). One player's TT-ing will NOT reset another player character's top score.
*An easy way to amass Bug Series items is to catch lots of palm beetles in the days before, then give them to Nate for the prize. You can then TT back to give him another bug and again get top score and another item.
*The Bug Series items are divided into 2 groups. You will NEVER get all the Bug Series at your town at that particular Bug-Off no matter how much TT-ing or resetting you try. The group available on that date is pre-chosen.
HOWEVER!!
*This does not carry over between Bug-Offs(I have not tested yet, so I'm not sure if the July will definitely have a different group than June, but there is certainly the chance).
*If you visit someone else's town during their Bug-Off, you can give Nate your bugs to try for their group of Bug Series items. When you do so, your bugs WILL NOT count towards their town's top score. He will also(this requires confirmation) NOT remember your score, allowing you to continue giving him 80+ scoring bugs for more items.
Well, I think that's all there is to it.
If anyone has anything to add, just mention. Happy Hunting!

Be aware that the scores by species are only on the base points; Peacock Butterflies, listed in group C, have gotten me 84ish points.
Also, migratory locust is on the wrong rarity tier on the list
