I feel that anime is liked by tons and tons of people, but I struggle to like it simply because of the artstyle. Almost every anime looks the same and I'm just tired of seeing that same artstyle all the time. It's not that I don't like the style because it's popular, I just have never liked it, so I don't understand the appeal of literally almost every anime using the same artstyle. I want to see more cartoons and anime using unique styles of their own, that's how I like some of the cartoons and animes that I do because they actually went for something different and the style they went for appealed to me, wanting me to give it a chance. I know an anime can be good if you look passed the style, but it's really ugly to me, so I don't even really bother if it looks the same as everyone else's.

While I personally like the general style of anime, I think it's perfectly valid if you have a different opinion.

I do see variety in anime artstyles, though. For instance, I think anime like Violet Evergarden or Somali and the Forest Spirit are absolutely stunning. On the other hand, I don't really care for the animation style of Fist of the North Star or Jojo's Bizarre Adventure.

But for me, the animation style will always take a backseat to a good story and character development. I can watch anything, regardless of how it's drawn, if the story captivates me or the characters draw me in. Likewise, even if I love the look, I'll pass if there is no substance.

There's always art style differences in anime but unless you're really into it, you won't really notice. Just check out Clannad eyes vs say Noragami eyes vs FMA eyes. Or even Nichijou character designs vs K-On! character designs.

But my mom says the same thing. She just doesn't overall like the style and that's totally fine. I'm picky with the art too and can't stand ugly art style or bad animation quality and won't give a show a chance based on that

I find Studio Ghibli's art to be beautiful. In general, I'm not really educated in anime art styles enough to say a lot on the subject.

I'd agree that story and character development are much more important than the art quality. I'd be more open to accepting a great story with poor art quality than accepting a poor story with great art quality.

Then again, I'm not really big into anime anyways. When I was growing up, I loved Looney Tunes (especially the classics!), Road Runner, Tom & Jerry, Merry Melodies, and all of those cartoons. I also liked Phineas & Ferb a lot!

I understand your sentiment. I used to watch anime quite a lot, and over time I ended up just growing out of it and appreciating the art style from DC, Marvel, and Image. I like certain anime, but yeah, I can see where you're coming from with a lot of their art style looking pretty similar to one another. I do like the art style in Akira, Ninja Scroll Ronin Warriors, and The Big O, just to name some off. I think part of it is because there is almost some sort of "realism" with their face and bodies. The Astro Boy manga called Pluto kind of went that direction, which I thought was cool. But there have been other anime that aren't anatomically correct that I do like and still enjoy if given the opportunity to watch them.

oh you need to look harder if you want a certain style, from the top of my head some anime with distinct style:
  • Panty & Stocking
  • Ojamajo Doremi
  • Mob Psycho
  • Gurren Laggan
  • Jojo
pretty sure Google can help you more in this, but these are all good shows too

I actually heard of a couple of these. I completed Panty & Stocking as one of them.

I think one of the reasons I don‘t really watch much anime is because they all look the same to me. It looks pretty, but it also looks boring. I like cartoons because they have distinct styles and it isn’t just ”sparkly-eyed schoolgirl” over and over again. No hate to ya if you watch anime though

I never really used to have any interest in anime, but I've come to enjoy it in the past couple of years because in my opinion it's able to go beyond what normal acting and special effects can do but still somehow make it feel sort of believable. Plus it feels like it can get away with stuff like character deaths much more easily than normal film can. In the beginning I thought that pretty much all anime was the same, but the more I watch it, the more I come to appreciate how many different art styles there are, particularly the Studio Ghibli films, I actually enjoy the art style they use more than many Disney films.

I'd recommend checking out Ghost in the Shell Sac_2045, it feels more like they used computer generated models to create it rather than drawings. The look of the characters felt kinda strange at first, they're sort of like 2010's video game models, but a few episodes in you start to get used to it.

The only style I can't stand is like stereotype shoujo style with excessive pointy hair/big eyes things like kitchen princess, vampire knight etc. otherwise i don't really mind.

I do recommend like 90s and older animes though, they have some pretty good art.

Either something looks good or bad to me—I don’t care if I’m seeing the style for the first or 100th time. Maybe this comparison sounds too simplistic, but I don’t get bored by watching live action, and see no reason why animation has to be any different. It’s just another medium for storytelling and has no responsibility of offering me visual variety. If it does that can be a bonus, but it’s absolutely secondary.

I'd say JoJo's Bizarre Adventure's art style is VERY different, it also pretty much changes every season so that might be something you'll enjoy?
Oh! Maybe Danganronpa as well.
I personally watch anime for the story and the characters, for the most part every anime I have watched I really enjoyed, JJBA being one of them.

I don't really pay attention to that. I prefer anime that's just about normal looking people in realistic situations, but I'll watch anything with a good plot. The same goes for cartoons, I don't really differentiate between them too much honestly. Personally I just prefer pretty surroundings.

There are different art styles in anime if you start looking more into it~
Anyway you don't need to like it.

i'm more uncomfortable with how much girls are sexualized even when they're underage. im aware not every anime is like this but u gotta admit... it's definitely in a lot

Anime, like western cartoons, vary vastly in art style across genres and even time periods. Sure there are certain hallmarks that are common in anime such as the larger eyes, but to say that all anime looks the same for reasons such as this seems a little misguided. Like western cartoons, you can find all kinds of differences among anime in key features such as line depth, proportions, coloring style, etc.

The Rose of Versailles and Mobile Suit Gundam for example both released in the 1970's, and though there are some similarities that can be attributed to the time period (under the influence of Osamu Tezuka, who in turn was influenced by Disney), you cannot tell me that artists Yasuhiro Yoshikazu and Riyoko Ikeda draw the same. They impart a certain uniqueness and vision to these two stories.

I guess because I studied animation for a time and collect art books from both anime and western cartoons, I can't help but get a little passionate about topics such as these. But if you're looking for anime with particularly unique and interesting artistic visions, off the top of my head I would like to recommend Mononoke, Red Line, Kaiba, Ping Pong the Animation and Paprika.
