I have been following a guide on what fish I need left to get and I can not seem to get any of the river fish or the river cliff top? I am not sure how to find them. Would I have better luck if I was to go to mystery islands?

Have you terraformed your clifftop rivers at all? It's possible that by changing them with terraforming, the game doesn't consider them to be clifftop rivers anymore. Are you able to catch any clifftop fish, and just certain rare ones aren't appearing? Or are you not finding any of the clifftop fish at all?

Do I have to add a pond at the cliff area of the river? I am not able to catch any river fish at all I seem to be getting the same 3 over and over
:(

YES, the stringfish is destroying me, I have used well over 150 bait and cannot get it. I know im fishing on the right place (the river clifftop) but its so hard. RE your question I believe that the clifftop river can just be any river on the second or third layer not necessarily a pond or anything

Did you terraform? If not, the rivers that are on the highest level of cliff that you can reach should have clifftop fish in them. If you terraformed, it might have caused the game to not consider them the right body of water.

Have you time traveled at all? If so, perhaps you're not in the right day/time for the fish that you want.

Are you catching any of the more common clifftop fish, or none at all? Are you saying that you're not catching river fish, period, and only pond fish? A clifftop river will have a waterfall leading to a lower level.

If everything is set up correctly, then you'll just be at the mercy of RNG. Some of the clifftop fish are ridiculously rare. If you're able to catch other clifftop fish, then everything is set up right, and you'll just have to keep fishing until you get lucky.

There's been other discussion on the subject of clifftop fish here. I don't know if it will add anything, but it might be worth a look.

I thought I had terraformed that area but maybe I haven't . I have time travelled to the month and time its says to catch these fish. I am getting more common river and pond fish nothing else.

Thank you :) I will look into the link you have posted :)

I finished mine in December 2020. Every month since March, I would get a list of all the finish and would set a goal to get the fish before doing anything else.

I ended up getting my cliff fish by chance without bait, but for my second town, used bait all the way

The only fish I've had a real hard time getting is the pier fish.
Mine never spawns any fish so I needed to use bait to get any chance of getting one.
Took hours and hours to get them.

Yea the stringfish is giving me problems as well. No matter how much bait I use I can’t find one,

Edit because I finally caught the stringfish

I basically gave up because I have so much trouble with the stringfish and some of the other rare ones. Ditto for a couple of the rare bugs. I've done better this summer at catching the tree critters but I'm still missing a couple rare beetles and I also don't have a fly.

I'm pretty sure I've caught the String fish multiple times on terraformed cliffs/rivers, so that shouldn't be the problem. There's been a few times I would be running around my town and see a Size 6 fish on my cliff. I might even have one instance on video yet.

You might just have to keep at it. If you need some fish bait, I can make some for you. When fishing for the Mahi-Mahi the first time last summer, I believe I used somewhere over 400 fish bait.

After using a few packs here and there, I ended up getting a large amount all at once and took this photo. IIRC, I left empty handed and crafted about 30 more when I finally found it

The pier fish are the ones I absolutely dread catching. Though I hate fishing in general.

In my first town, I caught a handful of Giant Trevallies looking for the Mahi-Mahi, and in my second town, it was reversed. Found a handful of Mahi-Mahis while looking for the Giant Trevally.
