(Public domain means that a piece of media is old enough and has had no one fight to renew the copyright that the copyrights expire and anyone is free to use it as they please)

Is anyone into public domain media? I guess I just ask because I'm always interested in finding ways to get entertainment for cheap or free, and only recently discovered how much is out there in terms of public domain stuff. It's really easy to get your hands on that kind of media because anyone can publish it online without copyright infringement, and there are whole websites dedicated to publishing public domain books as free ebooks or streaming public domain movies for free.

I was thinking about reading Mary Shelley's Frankenstein since Halloween is coming up, and then I've also been into watching old Betty Boop shorts, how about y'all? What's your favourite piece of public domain media?

I have so many classic books that are available for free in the public domain. Some like:
2,000 Leagues Under the Sea
Alice's Adventure In Wonderland
Beauty and the Beast
Th original Little Red Riding Hood and Sleeping Beauty
Moby Dick
Peter & Wendy
Peter Pan In Kensington Gardens
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
Robinson Crusoe
Rip Van Winkle
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
The Arabian Nights Entertainment
The Blue Poetry Book
The Wizard of Oz
The Frog Prince
Jungle Book
The Merry Adventures of Robinhood
The Prince And The Pauper
The Princess & the Goblin
The Story of A Puppet (The Adventures of Pinocchio)
The Scarlet Letter
The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde
The String of Pearls, or The Barber of Fleet Street
The Sun, Moon and Talia
The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin
The Three Little Pigs
A Collection of Edgar Allen Poe Stories
Treasure Island
Wind In The Willows
Through The Looking Glass
The original Bambi story
Phantom of the Opera
Heidi
Emily Dickenson
Hans Christian Andersen Collection
Oliver Twist
Cinderella
and a whole lot more.

Hopefully these timeless classics will remain preserved through public sharing.

CLASSIC BOOKS ARE SUCH A GOOD ONE, PLAYS AND PHILOSOPHY BOOKS AS WELL. KURI DID THE WORKS THOUGH WITH THEIR LIST, SO I WON'T SPAM.

I'm a huge advocate and user of Public Domain works !! Especially on an educational side, I've learned so much about coding, languages, and have acquired textbooks for law school throughout things published under public domain. :D I think to limit education behind a paywall, or to pirate said content is awful on all regards... I'm glad more people are turning towards public domain and open source for the things they create/tutorials/lessons they put out.

Written work is gifted the most with this, and I hope more things on an entertainment level get released eventually. There's quite a bit of free movies out there, but not any that I can think of being worth mentioning...
Also, the most common side of public domain, is probably school projects ! What powerpoints aren't littered with public domain images? And that helps out local events and businesses as well, when they make flyers or cards. All around a good thing.

lol I'm actually going to take a break from reading Gone With the Wind when October starts to read Frankenstein for Halloween!

I almost exclusively read older or classic books these days. Modern media isn't quite doing it for me lately. :p

twenty something former english literature teacher here

i liked it because i could be the crusher of the excuses that you couldn't read wuthering heights

I know several original Looney tunes cartoons have fallen into the public domain, and some of them are really good.

Never been exposed to public domain media.

you've never been exposed to classic disney films? (not the films themselves, but the source material they're based on being public domain. which should count for a level of exposure, imo)

also, I should get to reading some of my public domain stuff

and I wish copyright extensions hell hadn't screwed over things from becoming public domain sooner, so corporations could line their pockets more

Yeah, it's fun to dig thru and sometimes needed for film/lit classes as well since sometimes you can't find them at all except there or just obscure sites.

I also love digging thru such more archive-ish pages, it's hella fun.

I own a Kindle and you can get so many free classic books on there! One of my all time favorite books is The Count of Monte Cristo!

No, and I probably won?t because I don?t really get into new things anymore... but I?d like to remake a public domain book or movie into a comic or animation because I?m not really good at making original stories.
