Are housing placements completely random?

I seem to have been really lucky with my housing placements recently. I do the character reset trick when I know someone is due to move in, not to get a specific character but to ensure they have a decently placed house. I first got lucky with Tia; the first time she moved it was a lousy location but the second was EXACTLY where I wanted her. Today, I was expecting Poppy to move in, so logged onto a new character. The first house I wanted her was in a really nice location, but not exactly where I wanted. The second was right on top of EXACTLY the right shape of brown dirt (from my character reset house). A very good location, but still not where I wanted. The third was the very very place I wanted her. Literally the perfect location. She's my only dreamie too so Im so excited for her to move in ♥
Is this just good luck? Is there some method to housing placements? Has this ever happened to you? Or alternatively have you ever had someone move in a really TERRIBLE location?

Congrats on getting her to move in the right place! My gosh...sometimes it's taken over an hour to get mine somewhere decent. I find that new villager houses seem very frequently be on top of, or very close to the spot where an old villager house was. Or they like to move in next to a cluster of other villager houses (I guess they hate being lonely :). I've only ever twice, in resetting for plots in three towns, seen a villager move to a completely random spot far away from any other houses. I can usually sort of predict where mine will try to move in, most of the time it's where the last villager used to live, which is usually okay with me. Sometimes they surprise me and pick somewhere I wouldn't of thought would be good, but it's ended up working out well.
Enjoy your dreamy :)

Okay, that would make sense! I have a little peninsula which is full of villager houses, in vertical rows. And she moved onto the end of one of the rows, where I wanted her to go, so the theory of villagers moving near each other would make sense as this is also where Tia moved to on the second time. I suppose it helps that this is where all my starter villagers were clustered together, which gave me the idea. Makes it feel like the rest of my town has so much room/quite empty (some might not like that I guess). Thanks for answering ^^

No probs! I think it's cute when they all live together, it's like their living in a little street in your town ^_^ and it leaves you plenty of room for PWP and such.

Exactly! Thats what I was going for, like a sort of neighborhood feel. I was thinking of putting some nice paths connecting all their houses with streetlamps and things, my my QR reader unlocks again. Hopefully it'll look okay. There's a dreamtown somewhere with all the houses in DEAD straight lines, in certain areas of the map, which I think looks really nice, although I haven't visited yet.

Out of curiosity, :0
How do you use the character reset before they move? ALL of mine are in terrible locations D;

Whoa, sounds like that dream town is very neat and organised! I like the idea of connecting the villagers houses with paths and streetlamps, that'll be a fun project to work on ^_^

If you know when a new fence will appear in your town (eg. if you've asked a villager to move in from another town, then you can predict that their fence will turn up usually the next day), don't begin the game with your Mayor, start a new character first. Then walk around the town, and find the fence. If you don't like where it is, hit 'home' button and come out of the game without saving. Then make another new char, repeat, until you find a plot location you like. When you the fence is somewhere you like, you need to go to Isabelle and then Nook, then Isabelle again, to save the new character. Once you've 'moved in', then you can save and exit, and delete the new character. Then you're safe to log in as the Mayor because the fence plot will now be saved.

If you don't know when a new fence might appear, I've found that the game will sometimes start sending you a new villager 3 or 4 days after the last has gone, but more likely 6 or 7 days, but only if you have less than 10 villagers in town. If you have 9 then you only get your 10th from camping, streetpass, other people's towns.

Hope that helps, it's a bit complicated lol :)

Congrats!

I'm too careful to do the reset trick, but Merry lives 2 spaces in front of my house.

I am slightly wary of the reset trick I have to say. BUT, I've never had to do it a ton of times, only maybe three times at the max in one go. And now I've got 9 villagers again, I probably won't have to do it for ages again until I get a camper or something. I won't reset for different campers or anything. Only when I know people are moving in. Aw Im so excited for Poppy to be out and about
