What is your favorite movie
If I have to narrow it down...
Am?lie (2001), which is a romantic comedy about an introverted waitress finding love, but to me it was so much more than that: an all-around fun movie with emotionally engaging characters, and that is really a story about humanity in general. That makes no sense, I know. I suppose sharing a one minute clip will give a better idea what I mean: '
Nino is late,' which is about Amelie, the title character, wondering why Nino, the man she has a crush on, has not shown up to meet her yet.
Another movie I very much enjoyed and that would also have no problem calling my absolute favorite is
Kiki's Delivery Service (1989). Once again, I absolutely love all the people in this movie, even the 'bad' ones, because they are fully-realized individuals. I thought it was largely nostalgia that seared this movie into my head, but re-watching it recently I realized that I identified closely with Kiki because, like Amelie, she is introverted, and where people in real life saw my personality as problematic, here were movies that treated like characters with nuance and tenderness. I also am in love with Hayao Miyazaki's hand drawn animations, and the idyllic urban and natural landscapes he depicts, in this case the town of Koriko, an imagined European style seaside city if there was no Second Great War.
Another movie that feels similar would be
7 Centimeters Per Second, about a childhood romance made fleeting by a forced move, and which eats away at the male protagonist into his adulthood, until a chance second encounter allows him to move on. Perhaps even more than Miyazaki, the director for this movie, Makoto Shinkai, focuses heavily on environment, with his close-up shots of a basketball coming to a stop on a court, rays of light resting in an empty classroom, a bird bursting through thick storm clouds in the night into the rising sun. I wouldn't say this is my favorite movie, but I like it for similar reasons as the one above.
And before I go way too long ('before'—right), another movie I would also not mind calling my absolute favorite is
Blade Runner (The Final Cut), about a detective (played by Harrison Ford) who hunts down renegade androids who've escaped servitude and now seek out a way to extend their lives on earth. Once again, this is a story that studies human nature, bringing into question what it means to truly live. And the final lines by the lead android to Ford's character felt more human than anything else in that dreary jungle of steel and concrete that is the main setting of the film.
and were you born polite or did you have to work at it ? ( yes it's a compliment)
Even in childhood I was much concerned with politeness. One of my earlier memories is of a trip to the Philippines, specifically when my aunt brought me to her place of employment, a mine, to meet her manager. My mom says they were taken aback by my use of 'sir' in addressing the manager.
Even so, I was certainly more short-tempered in my teenage years. More than just for practicing it, I find politeness to be an interesting topic related to communication, as people often confuse being 'nice' with being 'good.' I remember a short but interesting conversation about this in a topic on my message board: '
Some thoughts on the externalization of evil.'
Not to say I'm secretly evil, though I could be.
