I've been working on a character for a game my friends and I are running. She's coming along quite nicely, but the head honcho offed my idea, stating she "looks too much like a giraffe". I really like what I did, but maybe it does need some improvements. And from the sounds of it, her color palette is what needs some work. What do you guys think?
Her name isn't set in stone, but I've been calling her Rowan Astrelle. She's a doctor hired by a group of bounty hunters to keep them healthy while they travel the galaxy in search of their bounty. She's a fish-person sort of creature, hailing from a fictional planet known as Zoraqui-6. Once one of the greatest surgeons in her homeworld, Rowan had her medical license revoked and was ostracized after making a serious mistake during a routine surgery on a member of the Zoraquian government. Skilled in her field but lacking a license, she works for the hunters to afford to go back to school.

The blue areas on her skin are supposed to be scales, I just didn't have the level of detail enough to add that in.

She looks like a character who would have appeared in fish hooks

What type of fish is she?

I didn't really base her design off of one fish, but among the references used were koi and eels. I think I used a picture of a salmon too.

She really does look like a giraffe. I think it has to do with the nose.
Hm, I guess you're right. Didn't really notice that.

Alright, so I'll rework the nose. Anything else you guys thinking?

Something about the eyes make it seem more mammal like than fish like?? Idk I'm horrible at designing things :'D

Maybe just the color palette.
Or if you're using multiple references, pick key characteristics.
Koi appearances are radiant(since your character looks like a nurse, her scales should be more brightened).
Eel eyes seems intimidating, some nurses can be intimidating.
And for salmon, maybe just the mouth and perhap fin?
Idk

The colors don't contrast a whole lot. The brown and blue don't really have much of a striking difference.

If you're a fan of the blue and are basing it off of eels then

maybe that would be more what you're looking for? Moray eels in particular that have blue on them tend to have really bright yellow or flecks of it.
