If you want your avatar rendered it needs to be the same size as your avatar when uploaded, so it'll need to be a 100x100 or 150x100 (depending if you have the extension) rendered image and then uploaded to appear rendered. If it's anything bigger and has to be resized, it'll lose it's render.
