I hear you. I'm paying just under 1 grand/monthly for my 1 bedroom 500 square foot apartment which is technically in Denver - even though it's the furthest you can physically get from the city while still having the Denver address. It was the only place we could find that wasnt shady, would allow our cats, and did a credit check instead of asking for pay stubs (we had saved up a year of rent and quit our jobs to come here)
Have you looked at condos to buy? Houses in Colorado have gotten insanely expensive but townhomes and condos are in a pretty ok range (as in affordable - my folks are upset at how expensive my condo is going to be) it's not ideal but it is something I can start putting equity into and have a bigger down payment a few years down the road hopefully to buy an actual house.
Also I'm talking advantage of first time home buyer programs so my down payment can be less. Do you have a program like that in Australia?
*autocorrect errors
*oof. Found out this morning that my closing cost is an extra couple thousand I wasn't expecting.
Anyone thinking to buy a place soon be prepared to get needled with hundred + hidden bills and fees along the way.
