I think part of the problem is the way in which you create your character's appearance. I mean, you answer a series of questions on a bus, which determines your facial features. Soooo what question would they use to determine race and how could they do THAT in a non-racist manner?? (btw: Please PLEASE do NOT post your ideas for a question to determine race). And then, you'd have to have a chance to confirm your race like you have with confirming your gender...
