Hi guys I’m trying very hard to catch barreleye fish at night but no luck yet. Is there any particular place it spawns in the sea? I’m looking for small shadow horse mackerel.

It took me like, 8 months? Yeah something around that to finally find it. And I was fishing all the time at night. There's no specific area for it to appear, so just go to the beach and keep trying. It's a very rare spawn, and there's really not much to do other than keep trying. You'll eventually catch it, probably when you're not even focusing on finding it.

Not really. The two I caught were from just collecting shells and fishing when I saw a small shadow. It's a very low percentage chance to spawn. The data mine spreadsheet says 1% all year if I remember correctly

Iirc I caught it accidentally one random night trying to complete a NMT task. I’m going to mention that I’ve hunted for it for several days beforehand using too many fish bait and got nothing to show for it. This game is whacked. I always don’t find what I’m looking for and find them randomly when I’m not looking for it. It happened to me with so many creatures already and even in villagers! Nintendo has a weird creepy desire sensor that I could never figure out.
It's possible the spawn rate was nerfed like they did for a lot of bugs mid April.

That's how I found the Stringfish. I wasn't fishing, just running from point A to point B. Saw a fish and decided to grab it.
As I did a lot of fishing to reach that fishing goal, I caught one for the museum, three that I turned into a model, and 6 more after that. They're rare, but definitely not impossible to get. They'll be anywhere in the ocean between 9pm and 4am, and their shadow is the same size as the horse mackerel. Fish for those, and you'll find them eventually!

This fish was terrible for me. I went to Nook Miles islands and just ran around the water's edge, scaring away anything that didn't have the right size. It still took me ages 
I don't think it's ~proven or anything but there was some talk before about being able to catch it off the rocks near the ocean. I actually did catch mine there, on a NMT island. My dad caught his off the rocky bits too. I don't think any of that's proven, but it made me feel more like I was on the right track through the placebo effect, at least
