Okay so I'm working on a Doubutsu no Mori e+ blog (it's not super active since I'm in school but you can see it on the Blog Tree). Well since the staff is planning on removing the Blog Tree and archiving all blogs there, I figured I would move it to a website which is dedicated to blogging.

The only thing is, I have no clue where to go. What websites do you guys recommend for blogging?

i havent really reached out into the blogging-sphere but i think that tumblr is really good for blogging because of how customizable a blog is and its indepth tagging system. you could tag by date if you wanted to, or set your blog to show posts in chronological order or something. i've been thinking about instagram for a potential blogging place because it's easily accessible and i like how minimalistic it is but i feel like its kinda lonely and there's no way to make it go in chronological order.

I was actually thinking about using tumblr since that's what most people use to blog, although I've heard some bad stuff about it. I'm also not interested in using a social networking website, I would prefer to use a website simply dedicated to blogs.

Maybe blogspot would be a good idea?

wordpress is pretty good imo, i've used it for plenty of sites and blogs before and have no complaints

I think that this was the website I was thinking of, not blogspot. I might try this one out.

ehhhh on second thought, wordpress wants to charge me money to use a domain (no thank you).

Well, here's my 2 cents.

Tumblr would be your best bet since your target audience probably uses Tumblr for the most part. They don't look for more 'traditional blogs'. Unfortunately, Tumblr has a lot of issues- with the community and its own features. I recently tried to create a Tumblr blog, but the editing section where you change/edit your theme was totally white and blank. I tried as much as I could to see if it was just me, but apparently there are quite a few people experiencing glitches one way or another.

Wordpress is also an option. I used it for a writing website a while ago, and it was a great way to create a nice blog. Its interface isn't too user-friendly, but once you get the hang of it, it's fine. Better than not having an interface at all. Lookin' at you, Tumblr.

Thanks for the input. I'm having a really difficult time installing Wordpress on my computer (if you're willing to help w that and make it less confusing than the people at Wordpress have made it then I would appreciate that). And I really want to try to avoid tumblr because I know it's mainly a social networking site and I don't like that idea.

also I would reeeeeeeally rather not have to spend money.

Downloading Wordpress to your computer? That's strange- I just used their website online and logged into my account.

I think I may have it figured out, I told them I wanted a free website even though they tried to get me to pay at least $4/month.

I see. Paying for Wordpress just adds features. For what you're doing, going the free route sounds like it will work fine. They've updated it since I used it so things may have changed a bit than from what I remember.

I did find a guide to using Wordpress (with description timestamps for every topic):

i second this; tumblr is a really nice place to blog imo

I finally figured out how to download WordPress (I just installed the app lol, screw the manual installation) and I'm slowly but surely getting my profile set up. Once I get it all figured out I'll have to put a link for it in my signature.

Thanks for the help everyone! :D

tbh if you were only interested in the animal crossing community they're usually not problematic at all. most of the time it's positivity and pretty screenshots. i feel like other games such as the sims and such often experience all the stereotypical tumblr discourse that you may have heard about. things like minecraft, stardew valley, and other chill games similar to animal crossing also don't experience that. it really just depends on your communities/game interests.

regardless of that, i hope your experience with wordpress goes well!! once you get your blog up and running please link it in your signature or something; i like to stalk people's blogs oop-

Tumblr has definitely changed over the years. I've had my blog since 2005-06. Themes aren't the same as they used to be and you're better off looking for custom themes done by users than trying to create or use their boring ones.

Wordpress is great if you don't mind the ugly ads you get with the free version. I use the paid service for my portfolio and I like it more than other actual portfolio building websites. The only thing that sucks is their price increase for the domain option... because now it pretty much matches other website services even though I picked wordpress because it was cheaper. Of course, that doesn't really matter to you if you're making a free blog. I don't like tumblr for actual blogging with large amounts of text. I also hate the whole re-blogging gimmick so I would not recommend that. But tumblr has a "community" so it will be easier for viewers to find by simple tags.

If you want a simple ad-free blog I suggest trying out blogger/blogspot instead. Looks kind of like a dead service because of how archaic the themes/interface looks, but it's still great imo. Also, blogger is directly linked to your gmail account (you can just make a new account specifically for your blog) so if you have gmail, you already have a blogger. It allows you to upload way more images than you'll ever need directly onto the blog too. I even use my blogspot to upload photos and use the URL direct links instead of a site like Imgur. Not sure if the wordpress uploader has a limit for the free version. Downside to blogger is that it does feel a little old school (some might like that, like me) and the themes aren't as intuitive to customise. You'll probably have to heavily self promote the blog if you care about viewers because it might not have an active community like wordpress or tumblr. My blogger is in my signature if you need an example!

I was actually considering using blogspot. I might have to check it out. I've been doing stuff with wordpress trying to figure it out and the user interface is plain and really difficult to customize. Plus to use addons you have to pay for a subscription, which I'm not doing.
I checked out your blog and it looks pretty good! Are you able to make individual pages for each blog entry (instead of putting them all on one page)?

Yep, blogspot has two options. One is the regular blog pages which appear as a feed on your main page. You can edit the number of posts on your main page through the customisation area, as well as do general things like hide/draft/scheduled post etc. Second are "pages" which are their own page that also appear on your main blog column, although they will not appear unless you put a direct link to it somewhere (good for things like an info page). Aside from that there are a few useful widgets you can add to your side bar that aren't too complex and most are free. You can also make it so that there's no right/left column, so there are quite a few options you can play around with.

So I've been trying out Blogspot and it seems like it's really easy to format stuff which is what I was looking for. I'll prob go with this and not worry about Wordpress.

Just one more question, and this is prob kinda obvious, but I'm assuming you can host your blog on their website server without having to pay for it?

Yep!! You'll be stuck with a .blogspot.com name at the end, but that's the same as Wordpress' free service as well. IIRC it's easy to change names as well, given that they are not taken. Haha yay, I'm glad I convinced someone to join blogger. Good luck with your blog!!
