I went and purchased the first Pokemon game in the Blue version. A question for anyone who's played and finished the game; what do you think- or in your experience- is the best team? I have a general outline of what I'm aiming for, but I am no expert in Pokemon teans, types, move sets, etc.

I always just use a team of my favourites usually. While also keeping in mind to have a nice balance of types. So I avoid having two flying types for example.

In older games such as Blue I also keep in mind which of my Pokemon can learn which HM. (In red and blue Charizard can't learn fly so something to keep in mind if you pick Charmander). I try to have each Pokemon know one HM move maximum if possible. Having an HM slave is an idea as well but I never liked that idea personally.

When it comes generation 1, the Psychic-type is ridiculously overpowered. It's so powerful they had to create an entirely new type (Dark) in Gen 2 so they could balance it. Definitely consider having a Psychic-type on your team. If you don't want to have a Psychic-type on your team, you're kind of crippling yourself as there aren't any decent counters to the type in Gen 1. Unfortunately, while today it is common knowledge that Ghost counters Psychic, in Gen 1 Psychic-types are actually immune to Ghost-type attacks. Additionally, Psychic's only weakness, Bug, does not have a single good attack.

This video is really helpful in explaining how Gen 1 battling works.

mewtwo x6 tbh

though really, gen1 pokemon is so laughably easy, you could probably run the entire game with just about any one high leveled mon and a bunch of hm/field move filler slots

also, special split. because **** like mewtwo as well as any other special based mon (of which every psychic-type was) being able to spam amnesia to boost its offensive and defensive capabilities to essentially gamebreaking levels was absolutely ****ing disgusting

and just to add insult to injury: all ghost-types in gen1 are dual poison, which is weak to psychic

squirtle can't learn earthquake, you'll need to evolve it

nidoran line (both) can't learn flamethrower

shadow ball literally doesn't exist

abra line can't learn confuse ray. ever

steel wing literally doesn't exist

return literally doesn't exist

steel, dark, and fairy types don't exist. type matchups aren't 1:1 the same as later gens either, both because and absent of this

sorry, but your planning severely lacks proper research

I fixed my team a few hours after creating my previous team. My comment was not the final result, or even close. I knew most of what you told me- but I did indeed make the mistake of putting in TMs that may exist in other games. Some of the moves I included changed to different types in later games as well, despite still being present in gen 1. Thank you for letting me know my mistakes. I need to play more Pokemon games to expand my knowledge.

Sometimes I put the first evolution of the Pokemon to represent it's whole life as I'm playing. I understand Squirtles cannot learn Earthquake. My new team (that I'm close to completing now- only lacking two Pokemon) is much better. I've gotten far in the game with them.

well, that's good

but yeah, don't worry over it too much, since as mentioned gen1 is stupid level easy

though as a heads up, focus energy and dire hit are bugged to cut your crit rate in half. not sure if new plans utilized, but just in case

(actually in case you're somehow unaware, gen1 as a whole is a completely buggy broken mess. quite fun in its own way, once you know your stuff for it)

Thanks. And yeah, I'm aware of all the glitches. But I bought the 3DS remake of Blue, so most of the serious glitches were fixed/tweaked.

Personally, I'd have to disagree on you concerning the whole 'gen 1 is too easy' thing. It's much more challenging than the remake of Ruby/Sapphire or X/Y. Plus it's more interesting than Johto, in my opinion. But hey- to each his own! :)
