So this may be an unpopular opinion, but I'm really bummed that in order to progress in the game, I need to pay off my loan and upgrade to a house. I really wanted to keep the tents for a bit, I like the deserted feel they give to the island, but I don't have a choice...

Unless there's something I missed and you can pay off the loan without automatically upgrading to a house?

When you pay off the loan you have to talk to nook again and ask him to build you a house.
If you didn't ask him to make you a house you could of stayed in the tent
But this will limit what you get going forward/I'm not sure how much it.affects progress.

Yeah I was a bit bummed about this too. Technically as long as you pay off your tent loan you should be okay for a while though. It's just that upgrading to a house will allow you to use Nook Mile+ redemptions and that gives you useful things like extra pocket space and sturdier tool recipes. But if you don't want to do this and stay in a tent for a while, for storage you could still put stuff outside or wait until someone trades you a closet. The tree branches are also very easy to find and very frequently so you can keep making flimsy tools until someone trades you a better one while you're in your tent. You can also unlock Blathers while still in a tent without the house upgrade. Not sure what other stuff are locked behind the house upgrade though, since I'm only on Day 1.
