Can not use messages on my profile

So I received a message on my profile and when I click on 'view conversation' it tells me I do not have permission to access that page, which is strange. I'm also not able to view messages on someone elses profile.
Can anyone help me with this?

It sounds like the other person has their profile set to private/friends only (I think). So you're unable to reply to their messages on your wall via conversation or directly.
