Smash Bros Can two people play couch multiplayer with an online friend in smash?

My husband and I are trying to play together on our switch at home with his cousin online from a different state.. But whenever we make a private online room for friends I'm not able to join as the 2nd player and only my husband and his cousin can play. My husband and I are able to play random people online as a team match. So it doesn't make sense to me that we both can't play with his cousin. Please help!

I thought this was about online in general but for arenas I actually think that it's not possible. How odd...

It seems like we would have to buy a second switch in order to play... It's honestly so frustrating they didn't implement this when this feature has been in past games... I hope they add it in a patch sometime soon...

This seems like something they have to patch in the future yeah. I'd really love that and also to be able to add CPU players in the arena. By extension I'd like to use amiibo online but that probably won't happen.
