Can you use 2 sets of joy con for couch co-op?

So I know you can use one set ( each person gets one) to play couch co-op, but it's such a small controller. My bf and I have our own Switch, and I wanna know if we can both use our own sets (with the controller attachment) as our controller so that it's the full one for each of us. Hopefully that makes sense!
