card scanning problem

Hi
My girlfriend has got Isabelle a few times when shes been scanning in other characters amiibo cards? Anyone else ever get this and have any ideas why this is happening? She has already used Isabelles card and is playing the game on a 2DS and scanning with the NFC reader/writer.

First, did you connect the NFC to the 2DS?
And did you buy the correct NFC one, rather than buying a knockoff?

Is Isabelle's card too close to the NFC reader? I had my stack of card next to mine while trying to scan in another card and kept getting Roald instead of whoever I was scanning, but once I put the 3DS and reader on a flat surface with just the one card it reads fine.
