I'm planning on dressing up for Halloween this year after not doing it for about 3-4 years now. For my costume to be complete, a toy firearm (Like a AK-47) is required. I'll most likely strap it to my back instead of carrying it with my hands. The question is, would it arise suspicion? Would I get the police called on me? What are the risks? Now 'n days, shootings are all over the news so I would understand the precautions.

What are your guys' thoughts? Should I just improvise and not use a gun at all? ;v;

Fake guns come with an orange tip, if you paint or cover up the orange you can get arrested

Otherwise you should be fine

If it looks like a real gun even from far away you'd better not to be safe.

You might wanna spray paint it a different colour (even if this takes away from the costume) so they know it's not a real gun, or buy a gun like a nerf gun instead :v

Yeah, I won't try doing that, that's for sure. x'D

Yeah, I was thinking about just bringing a nerf gun, but then again it DOES take away the effect of the costume. I still have a few days left anyway to think about this.

I think it would be better if you didn't bring the toy gun. I remember the rules with conventions how most prop weapons weren't allowed, and I would say the same rules apply on halloween, so I would say play it safe and just don't bring it.

Where do you live? I live in Texas with open carry and seeing guns doesn't cause any concern. I don't have a gun, I see them all the time and it doesn't bother me. If you live up north, best be safe and make sure people know it's fake. If you're down south, don't worry about it.

the tip should be orange and as long as you're not waving it around and pointing it at people it'll probably be okay , haha

Not trying to be that guy, but if you're a POC it'd be safer to leave it at home, but if you're white and it has the orange tip you SHOULD be safe.

Just keep the tip orange. A lot of actual crime happens on Halloween, so I'm sure the police have a hundred other things to work about that a clearly fake gun.

If you keep the tip orange and keep the gun visible you should be fine. And don't play around with it of course. If a police approaches you, don't take out the gun.

Just carry the toy gun. Unless you're actively trying to hide the fact that it's not real, you won't have an issue....If you are trying to pretend it's real, it's your own fault if you get shot.

People have better thing to worry about than somebody walking around with an obviously fake orange tipped gun. My lord...They sell this kind of **** in pound land, nobody is going to call a friggin' swat team on you.

You should be okay I would think. I can understand the concern considering what's been going on lately. And really the police can be too careful about these things. But as long as you're not waving it round or threatening people with it and you don't conceal the coloured tip, you shouldn't have a problem

Thanks guys for all the input! I ended up not buying a gun for my costume though. I just felt it was too risky. However, if I change my mind, I think my brother has a toy gun somewhere in his room.

Seriously though, be careful with a gun, especially if you're a Person of Color like Kaydee said.

Remember Tamir Rice.

That's probably the best idea really. I know we don't even allow the kids at work to bring in toy guns, and majority of the older boys are coming in as some sort of solider. With everything you read about, it's probably better not to potentially end up in a difficult situation
Have fun! :)
