I thought you got 4 fossils every day, but if you don't find one it stays for the next day. Up to 6 max at one time can appear. I assess mine every morning.

Yeah, so once you get sick of fossils appearing if you bury 6 somewhere in hidden places, no more fossils will appear. You can do a similar thing with the tree branches and the 1 rock.
