For the past week I have been browsing TBT with images disabled (don't ask me why ,I just have) and when I went to the Chat for the first time, the page loaded, but there was just a big white box where the chat is meant to be. So like 3 minutes ago, I enabled images and clicked on chat, and the white box is still there... Help?

the problem is twofold:
1. you are being impatient
2. you are closing chat when you look at other topics

we don't all just sit around and chat, and the few of us that are usually on just idle in there using an IRC client (like mIRC, Miranda IM, xChat, whatever works)

so when you see people in there, say something, and wait a while, if you want to talk.
just chill. keep it open in a tab while you browse, and check in on it now and again. if no one says anything and you've already said hi, continue to just browse through TBT/do whatever else you're doing at the comp, if you still want to chat with whoever's on (or want to wait and see who comes on)

the biggest problem with the chat is impatience, and using the browser-client (which only shows what people have said since you've joined, not everything that's been said previously)

It's just a blank white box. There isn't anything in it.

But what the hell does it mean when I'm now known as an unidentified54464

i explained it already, in the chat.

it would really help if you read the IRC Users Guide Jas0n took the time to write. it's linked in the topic (at the top of the chat).

/nick <your nickname here> changes your name. unidentified means someone else has already registered that name, or you didn't identify when you logged in. if you haven't registered your name in the irc chat (nothing to do with TBT's registration), then chances are your name is already taken by someone else. in which case, just try a different one. add a little something at the beginning/end of your name.

Oh, okay, thanks. I did read that thread. But it didn't do anything with my brain.

And also the stupid strike out BB Code doesn't exist on vB :(

This. It's the most annoying thing when people join the chat, say hi and then leave a minute later because they didn't get a reply. Contrary to popular belief, the people like Me, ZR, Jubs, Psycho, Sock, etc who AFK in here all day don't sit staring at the chat waiting for you to come in and talk to us.

It also annoys me when people say the IRC is dead when they join it at like 7am when nobody else is online, join it during peak times, for multiple days we've had an insanely popular chat with new messages every few seconds.

Wouldn't it have been more beneficial to add the chat at the top of the home page like most boards do?

no, it wouldn't.

think of it this way: when you click on the chat link, you are being connected to the chat room/channel.
if you were to open two pages, you would be connected as two users, one for each tab/window.
many people open a bunch of topics (or, at least i do) and reply to them all in one go, and seeing 10 people join a chat room for every one person browsing the forum, plus forcing those who are already on the forums to be in/join the chatroom, makes for a very cluttered mess.

as it stands, you can tell how many people are in there. 4/5 people are usually on/idle in there, but it's better than not knowing anyone's in there. just keep one tab open, or use an IRC client and never worry about it again. piece a cake. :3

again, and i'm not sure if jeremy dislikes the idea or what, but making the shoutbox into a "notification" box to keep track of new blogs, new threads, announcements, etc. might be a good idea, while keeping the chat room as what the shoutbox used to serve as.

but not my site, just my opinion.

First Day = Overflow of activity

Mondays - Thursdays = Little activity

Friday = A little bit more activity.

Weekends = A little less activity than the first day.

Next Year = Very little activity year-wide.

Years after that = No activity

It's going to happen.

Infact, weekdays have been much more active than the weekend so far.
