its using certain colours to make a 'smoother' effect/blend colours. its different than dithering tho.

well i do appreciate it but it doesnt help me understand how to make it look nicer. guess i wasnt clear on that, ill put it in op then.
For the big one since I really like the 3D look, I'd pay 700+. I am not a fan of the bounce but I love the blink animation. Again, I love how you shaded it BC it looks 3D, so great job on that.
For the critique:
Idk this is just a personal thing, but the orange line around the skin mixed with a darker color kind of bothers me, since it blends together and looks fuzzyish but besides that, there's nothing else. I am not entirely sure how to fix it bc with the way i pixel I use grey around the skin or I blend the original skin line + hair line colors together and use that to outline the skin.
After looking more closely, I like hairstyle 2 better. 1 gives off the fuzzy look I mentioned earlier.
(Mini ones) I'd try defining the outside lines more. But then again ik some people who don't like that, so I dunno.

i think i chose a poor palette lmao esp with that dark hair
i like making outside lines darker but it doesnt seem to work for hair. the first one is supposed to look shiny rather than fussy but again, poor palette choices? i really should brush up on that.
ill see how different i can make the hair for the miku one, the flatness of it all kinda bothers me.

I love the hair shading on the first one! I don't think it's because of a poor palette choice, but I don't have much experience with that, so ;-; Aah sorry I'm no help at all... just wanna let you know that I definitely prefer this shading method than the other because the hair of the 2nd pixel looks kinda a bit like "plastic" and not like real hair, idk how I should express it better..

the original brown hair is what makes it hard to see the shading, is what i meant by poor palette choice huheu. its easier to see with the pink/yellow. now that i look at it, the right side shading looks rougher than the left bits. hm.
i do like the first hair shading better even tho its harder to do.
I like the second one, it's an improvement of the second example in the OP. ;v;

i use paint tool sai but i really should start using graphics gale so i dont use a million colours.

I like the first hair style a lot more, I think it brightens up the whole thing. Also I prefer the blink to bouncing a lot, I could see certain things would look nice bouncing but not everything, maybe even a slower bouncing? I don't know...
