In a recent but deleted community post on youtube from thebitblock, joshy mentions how he believes that custom designs will have the same limits as new leaf, minus 3 new hat styles. This seems so strange because SO many brand new clothing types were introduced. long dresses, poofy dresses, jumpsuits, shirts wrapped around the waist, the list goes on. So why would we not be able to create new custom design styles? its as simple as creating a grid board system that corresponds to the clothing model. Then again I'm not a game dev so take that with a grain of salt. But thats how basic texturing for 3D models goes. If the custom design options are the same as new leaf, its gonna be a BIG disappointment for me. But, as of right now, this is just like the case of the diving feature. Just because we haven't seen it yet, doesn't mean its not present. :/

By the way, the reason why he said there might not be new designs is because: only the things on the wall display are things we can design.

Sorry I'm just super passionate about custom designs,, I know they don't really matter to some people but its a huge thing for QR code makers. What are your thoughts on all this?

I think one of the recent videos, maybe from PAX, confirmed that’s where custom designs go.

For now I don’t have strong feelings on it, but that’s because custom designing is comparatively low on my list of priorities. I definitely see why it would be concerning for others though. It really is similar to not knowing whether bushes will be in the game; depending on how much landscaping* means to you, the more pressing the question becomes the closer we get.

*or what type/style of landscaping

I'm sure we will have more options than just the few designs on the wall we saw.
Nintendo would have 0 reason to restrict us from making long dresses or anything similar to what we have done in the past
Doubt we will be able to design back accessories however unless It is a basic bookbag design
Plus there are transparent patterns now as well

Oh shoot I completely forgot about the backpack/purse accessories. That brings up even more questions

as someone who’s never created her own designs, this is not super alarming to me but i can see why it’d be for some people and it makes no sense as to why nintendo would restrict us - they’re giving us so many new opportunities that it’d make no sense to take this one feature away

I mean honestly, this is a non issue at this moment. We don't know if we will be able to unlock more designs later in the game. For all we know, Nintendo might have a plan to regularly add new designs in the future through DLC or something.

I believe that this game will probably be the most heavily supported game in terms of DLC and added new content for Nintendo of this entire generation. They already mentioned how they plan to have regular updates and content releases on a seasonal timeline. We don't know anything about what they will bring to the game going into the future.

You cant believe everything you hear just because a youtube says it. He has no more knowledge of this game then any other person who is waiting for the release date. Everything he says is pure speculation and should be taken with a grain of salt.

I feel if anything the scarves, Dresses, etc, might not be available at first. Maybe they're unlock-able? I am keeping myself optimistic. I know for sure they will never make pants and shorts available for custom designs tho.

I love and need custom designs, but I'm not worried about this. Creating texture templates is very easy (from a dev perspective), they are really all squares/rectangles that wrap on the model. The only possible catch is how many texture maps some clothing/items might need/have, or how awkward the wrap would be to design for (think people making custom hair accessories from the cap in ACNL. It needs a bit more skill.)

But honestly, even if its limited at launch doesn't mean it'll stay that way. Nintendo has really listened to people about what they want, and making stuff customizable is a pretty simple thing to add in an update.

I don’t trust much of what he says. No one knows for sure until the game comes out but I have a feeling we will be able to design a lot more than what he suggests.

I have some hope for custom designs. Even though it was confirmed at PAX that the clothes hanging on the back wall of the able sisters' shop was custom designs, I also saw a phone case customization thing that was able to be bought with nook miles, so maybe stuff like shoes and bags will be able to be purchased with nook miles in the future? I hope so anyway.

My custom design fear is will we be able to make a non-pix-elated circle in a design? There should be an option to draw without the grids.

What makes you say you know this for sure?

probably not since it looks like patterns are still 32x32. we would need a larger grid to have soft edges on patterns.

We saw in the Animal Crossing Direct that patterns are upscaled smoothly. So they won't be pixelated as such, but ultimately still a low resolution.

i hope there's a way to turn off the smoothing. the sort of gradient edges some NL designers would use for softer round shapes looks much better to me than the smoothing.
