The title is a little confusing, sorry.

Basically i have had my town on the correct date, not TTing with IG or system clocks, but now kts apparently 2012 on january first?
I didnt even look at the date before starting up, now im stuck in this time until i get one of the villagers i dont like as much to move out:-/

How does this happen?
Has this happend to anyone else?

Weird. I don't know what happened, but you can wait until one of your villagers ping to move and then decline their request to move and TT all the way to 2016 and no one will move out. Your town will have a ton of weeds if you don't have the beautiful town ordinance and your villagers will hate you for abandoning them for 4 years, but your town will be in one piece.

pretty sure there's still a high chance of a villager moving out, thats 4 years.
i've declined a villager a request to leave, went on a 2 month hiatus from acnl, and i had 2 dreamies move away regardless of my denial of that last ping
.

I've seen this theory disproved a number of times. I wouldn't risk it if you have any dreamies you can't afford losing, but if you don't want to play your game in the past, you might not have any other choice but to hope for the least damage.

I've done it a lot in my town and have never had villagers move out. If people are saying that this isn't true, then I guess I can't deny it if they are recollecting things correctly. Either way, I guess the OP either has to try that (or accept a request for a non-dreamie to move out) or play 4 years behind (not that it makes a ton of difference except for some holidays).

Hmmm that's really strange, I've never heard of that happening. The only explanation I could think of is if you let a friend or a sibling play with your 3DS. I speak from experience with the sibling part. :p

Did your battery happen to fall out?
That's usually the cause of this, your system time restarts to the default. (Jan. 1st, 2012)
Does this happen a lot?

Oh!!! I beleive my battery did fall out when i was changing the plates on my DS,
I had no idea it did that!
Thanks so much, I do hope i can safely get back to the current date,

Will it be safe for me to TT when someone is scheduled to move in?

Definitely involves the battery being removed. I spilled a drink on mine and took out the battery and loaded up my game without checking and it was also reset to the same date. I was able to TT to the correct date and it didn't ruin anything, but I also didn't have anyone trying to move either prior to taking the battery out.
