Oswald the lucky rabbit was supposed to be in place of Mickey Mouse, but was scraped later during development of the first few cartoons. Both Mickey and Oswald have simple designs, so I see no point of the sudden change.
(In fact the whole game "Epic Mickey" was based around the missing of Oswald)
