Do I NEEED the nfc reader to play?? HELP!

So I reallllllyyyyyyyyyyyyyy want happy home designer, but I have an old 3ds but I saw it was being sold really cheap on the eShop. So my question is, if I have an old 3ds and no nfc reader and purchase the digital copy, will I ABSOLUTELY be unable to play the game on my old 3ds? Or is the amiibo thing not really necessary?

Cause I don't want to be in the middle of gameplay and it tells me to scan a card or I can't continue?
(Plus the digital version obviously doesn't come with an amiibo card so is it really a necessity to play the game?)

Thanks, and please help and be sure you know cause I don't want to pay 45$ for something that doesn't work.

Hi, I have HHD and I got the NFC reader. It doesn't seem to really play a large role in the game itself. I have done about 10 or 15 houses now and nothing has gotten in my way. They introduce it into the game after a few houses to explain that you can scan a card to get a certain villager to go visit someone's house, and I think it also mentioned that you can design those villagers houses, but I could be wrong since I was rushing through it haha. But basically, no, it shouldn't play a large role in the game and you definitely don't need it to play.

When the game talks about amiibo cards, it asks you if you have one. I selected that I do, so idk what she says if you select "I don't". But I'm 100% sure you can play the game perfectly fine without amiibo cards/nfc reader. You DONT need either.

Basically if you don't have amiibo cards you can only design houses for villagers waiting outside Nook Homes and cannot invite villagers into homes youve designed

You don't need the NFC reader to play at all! I got HHD for Christmas without the NFC reader, and I've been able to play. So you should be able to play without it too

You can still enjoy the game without Amiibo cards. All of the villagers will eventually show up on their own. I'm not sure about the "special" characters, though. I mean, with my Isabelle Amiibo card I was able to design a house for her. Would I have been able to without it? I have no idea.

You don't, but if you do you'll end up buying amiibo cards which allow you to build homes for NPC, such as resetti.

I've been playing for close to a month now without any of the cards. You can play absolutely fine; it's just that you won't be able to get any of the special characters to decorate their houses. You also won't be able to invite villagers from the cards to visit at whim or assign roles to specific villagers in the town. However, you can still design houses for the 300+ villagers that are available and design all the facilities around town which is what the game is mostly about anyway.

I'm on the fence about buying the NFC reader. I REAAAALLY want to make Isabelles house and a few other of the special cards but the cards seems so. I dont know. Im afraid of wasting a bunch of money and not getting characters I want haha. Im debating on whether or not I want to return my NFC reader because you really dont /need/ it to enjoy the game I guess.

I put in over 100 hours on my Japanese version (between July and September) without it, because I opted for the digital download instead of importing the reader/writer, opting to wait for the US release since it's region free. I enjoyed it quite a bit without it, so you really don't need it unless you want to scan in certain ones for the PWP's, or have certain ones visit other ones, and of course no specials (outside Lottie you do at the start) have any houses that you can do.
