Do villagers respond to your letters no matter what you say to them?

So something I always wondered. In every Animal Crossing game do villagers actually respond to your letter even though you said rude things to them? In New Horizons no matter I write to them they always seem to take it well and do write me nice letters despite me telling them rude stuff. Was this always a thing in Animal Crossing?

I mean I don't really think Nintendo programs it so that they know exactly what you're saying. I'm no programmer so maybe someone with more experience could speak on the matter, but I feel like they would need a key-word tracker, and then come up with responses depending on the combination and that's way too time consuming imo. Also, keep in mind this is a kids' game first and foremost; would Nintendo really want to start making kids upset because they're getting into fights with virtual anthropomorphic animals? 😅

Well in the original Animal Crossing the villagers said rude things to you when you talk to them but I would think they wrote letter back to you as if they couldn't understand what you were saying.

Ahhhhh interesting! I never said anything rude to why villagers in any game since I didn't want to risk their friendship dropping so I would imagine it would probably go something like that.

I used to find this in Wild World, the villagers personalities were a lot meaner and I'd constantly send them rude or stupid letters (obviously the really fun thing to do when you're young) yet their replies were always kind, seemingly grateful that I'd written to them no matter how nasty the content of the letter was.

I've only sent a few letters to villagers in New Horizons and they were all kind but I imagine if you sent a rude letter their reply would still be a kind one.

yeah it’d be a real hassle to program each and every inappropriate/rude key-words into the actual letter system. on top of that you could have used a certain one of those words into a sentence but not direct it towards them, but then it’d still be processed into the system that it was placed in the letter and therefore meant for the recipient, causing the letter to come back to you being not so pleasant even if you didn’t say anything wrong. it would just leave people confused and since many younger people play it, and many people played it when they were children they wouldn’t want to risk the fact of having them know exactly what you’re writing in the letters and sending something awful back. it’s one thing for a human being to send something to a virtual character, but for a virtual character to send something out of place back would kind of be odd and might spook people. this is just adding on to the fact that it’d be wayyy too much work programming each and every possible combination of words and sentences into the system, so in the end it was better to avoid the approach and just stick with the default letters.
