Luckily, I've only traded a few villagers before, and I usually lead them to the villager's house, then boot them after, as my wifi signal can be a bit iffy sometimes and I'd rather end the session before the wifi corrupts or whatever. If I was going to do an item trade, then I'd probably still boot people once the trade was done, but if it was someone I trusted then of course I'd let them have a wander for a while, provided they stuck to any rules I may have.
