Do you unlock more plants as you go?

I'm kind of disappointed with how little bushes and flowers we have in this game. Do you unlock more as you go along?

Yes, everyone who mentions colors or gardens usually unlocks a plant of some sort

I haven't done him yet, but I've seen Boone the gorilla on a playthrough and he wants a desert home that reminds him of his childhood...I believe he might unlock some cacti.

Is it possible to unlock bamboo for outside of the villager's home? A couple of landscapes have them in the background, and I would love to use them on my plots of land.
