Does anyone know why I can't give gifts to my villagers?

I have at least friendship level 2 with all of my villagers, which means I can give them gifts, but the game doesn't give me the option to do this. If you know anything about this please let me know.

You have to keep talking to them a lot of times daily to see the option to give them gifts. If you want to speed up the process time traveling can help with that.

The gifts need to be above a certain sell value, which I believe is 750 bells - not the price you’d buy something for, but the amount the nooklings pay you for it. So, for example, most clothing does not qualify and you cannot receive a photo in exchange (you still build friendship this way though).

3 wrapped coconuts/ pumpkins works or 2 wrapped non-native fruit, or 8 wrapped native fruits.

It generally takes about 4 weeks from when a villager moves in to when you can get a photo. But because RNG is involved, it could be longer.

If you are getting a higher percentage of floors and wallpaper as return gifts, I believe that is also a sign your friend score is going up.

Villagers can also give you their photo as a gift when they are visiting your house, or as a return gift on their birthday.

It seems to me to be less common but you can also get he photo as a reward for a treasure hunt or another favor you do for your villager.

Sometimes it just takes awhile to get a photo. You can check your friendship level with Katrina. Usually I give stacks of wrapped pumpkins and it sometimes still takes awhile.

Its RNG weather he gives you the photo despite being at a high friendship.

For new villagers, just keep talking to them everyday and you'll unlock that option eventually.

Otherwise, there are several instances where you can't give them gifts: if they are thinking, sitting, in the middle of catching a bug, fishing, cooking, crafting, conversing with another villager, looking at items at shops, when you have a lost item with you, when they are sick, during birthday parties, and in boxes.

But you should be able to give them stuff afterwards if you just keep talking to them (on most cases). For example, talk to them 3 times when they are fishing, or talk to them again after you get the DIY recipe, etc.
