Have you noticed that some people will only want the super popular villagers, and then more and more people want a lineup of villagers thats nearly the same? It kind of bothers me...

Here are two sets of popular villagers I see a lot:
Stitches ....... Merengue
Rosie ........ Ankha
Diana ........ Bob
Lolly ....... Dierdre
Marina ....... Zucker
Muffy ...... Bam
Marshal ........ Fang
Kabuki ....... Whitney
Kid Cat ...... Freya
Julian ....... Kyle

Something like that. And then you go to a bunch of towns, and they look very nice or whatever, but you realize that th last five towns you visited had 5 or 6 villagers in common, you know? I realize that a lot of people truly do love these villagers, but seeing towns with villager sets that are identical gets very boring after a while. I hope I didn't hurt anyone's feelings, or seem rude, but I wanted to put that out there.

It bothers me too, sometimes I feel like people only want certain villagers because everyone else has them, I know I shouldn't feel this way because people like what they like and the majority genuinely like these villagers, but it gets to a point where people's dreamie lists are so similar, i'm beginning to think they don't even like those villagers and just want to jump on the band wagon because everyone else has them. Or they consider them the best villagers in the game because they're so popular, so they think they must be the best when there's a good 300? (don't quote me on that) villagers in the game, and it kinda makes me sad because I feel like because of this whole tier thing, (don't get me wrong it's not a bad thing it's really helpful when pricing villagers) it's just when some people use it to determine what villagers they should have in their town and what villagers they shouldn't because of their popularity on the list. Which I personally think is unfair because you aren't really giving the other villagers a chance but who am I to say who can have what villager in town and who they can't? I personally think people should just pick villagers they like, and not for their popularity. Fair enough if you do like these villagers for who they are and your line-up just happens to have a lot of tier 1's - I can understand that. But there's a fine line between that and just jumping on the band wagon.

But I would be contradicting if I said I didn't have a couple of tier 1's in my town, but that's because I like them for who they are, not for their popularity.

Thank you!!!

I have Marshal, Pietro, Lucky, and Flurry, who are all high tier. I've had Molly, Whitney, and Ankha, high tier as well. However...

Molly and Ankha were starters. I forget why Ankha moved, and Molly moved without warning. Whitney was a random move in, but she was super kind and we were great friends. She also moved without warning me.

I saw a Marshal for sale here on Tbt once, and no one wanted him at the time, so I decided to buy him. After all, I did want to see why he was such a popular little guy.... And I ended up loving him!

I mean, I get a lot of high tiers, but I also freaking love Stinky, Grizzly, Static, Rocket, Nate, Jitters, etc;

I honestly thought I didn't want Marshal neither I had him before and found him boring, but I ended up getting him and Julian and I really love them both. However, I do love other smugs like Shep. I just wish there was more room in town otherwise i'd have villagers like Static and Blanche as well as Shep and Rod move in etc. I also have Ankha, but i'm actually gifting her to my sister. She's a sweet little kitty but I prefer other snooties like Portia or Bree. I will miss her when she goes though. I honestly do have a fair amount of high tiers, but I do try to give the lower tiers some love too and I find I love quite a few of them, there just isn't enough room in town.

My dreamie list is as follows:
Genji
Chief
Joey
Marshal
Julian
Bree
Phoebe
Portia
Pekoe
Ruby

The majority are villagers who have been my favourite neighbours from past games, such as Ruby, Portia and Chief. Marshal and Julian I knew I wanted from the moment they were revealed and before they were put into tiers.

Yeah. What you said about Static tho...
I mean, you should totally get static! He rocks!

I personally don't know if that's true, I haven't really looked that much into it! I personally love all the wolf villagers, as well as the dogs and cat, except the overly girly ones haha (the ones with 'make up' like the monkey, Elise i believe).. Oh and Deer villagers are pretty cute as well, but my dream town would be just all wolves. And I just got Butch from a very nice person, I really love him! He's so cool! c:

I personally like Marina just because she was my first campsite villager so she just naturally grew on me from living in my town for so long, and I want Deirdre because deer are my favourite animals in real life and she is the only AC deer with a colour scheme that I like, but I definitely do feel like some of the best villagers get severely overlooked for the popular ones. Although I think that people should get whatever animals will make them happiest, a lot of the popular ones are popular because they are quite cute. But I also think that it's a good idea to look at all of the villagers in New Leaf, or at least a lot of them, when choosing dreamies, because there are a lot of hidden gems.

I can't stand that. Notice how a lot of people like Melba now and I think some do just because she is popular.

I've noticed this as well. I think a lot of people pick these characters because they're cute, which I agree. A lot of them are really cute, but they're nothing special to me. I'll admit, I do have some of the popular villagers you listed (Ankha, Kid Cat, Lolly, and Rosie) but I didn't pick them for their looks or for their tiers. I have an all cat town, so I picked the villagers I thought would fit in the best. :)

Also, I had no idea Kabuki was considered popular. He also lives in my town. I picked him up from the campsite, but I never knew he was considered a popular villager. Most people think he looks scary from what I've read.

Hmm for me I chose my villager line up based on personality traits. Then I look at who catches my the most in that personality group. Pippy, Kitty, and Wolfgang (surprised about his popularity) are my dreamies because they were my starters and besties in the Game Cube version. Skye was a random move in who I planned to kick out but she grew on my so I changed my mind. Julian, Deirdre, and Punchy were chosen because they called out to me the most when I browsed the Smug, Uchi, and Lazy pages on Nookipedia. Merengue and Snake were well super cute and unique so I just had to have them. Finally Buck was the only unexpected dreamie that I have. He's my starter in ACNL and is now my fav villager ever (next to Pippy)

Haha, that's pretty much my mentality too. Look up the personalities, then which ones you like to match your theme or how they look and bam! invite them in.

I do think there is a connection between popularity and similar tastes - so it might come across as "bandwagon". Like many posts above, I have dreamies who are in Tier 1's. But that's not I like them because they're tier one but that they're cute and fits my criteria. Diana for example. I'm using her because she's "cute" in my eyes. And it seems like many people think so as well. But I do have dreamies in "Tier 5". I don't care what "Tier" they are, I just like them.

This is not to say that everyone has the same tastes, I mean there are other villagers that other players like that I don't - like mouse and duck etc. I don't like them doesn't mean others don't like them too BUT it could be a minority.

Well, this is just my opinions.

I usually base my villagers off their appearance. I'm aiming to have at least 1 villager for each personality type in my town.

The villagers who are really popular could also be cause they fit in well with favourable themes (e.g. cute, sweets) and majority find them adorable. Not saying that there is no bandwagonning, but just another side to what may seem like its bandwagonning :)
