Sailor Neptune and Uranus from Sailor Moon. They're a canonical couple, but when the show came to the US, they were censored and made into cousins. On top of it being messed up, the English dub still has them occasionally flirting which is just weird when they're supposed to be cousins. It's crazy to learn how many LGBT characters have been censored when brought to global audiences

Ah, yes. The OG Anime Lesbians and that ‘cousins’ bit. So infamous that when Viz announced they had the licensing rights for a new Sailor Moon release and redub, the ‘completely uncut’ part if the announcement trailer prominently included a shot of Haruka and Michiru lovingly and dramatically clasping hands (along with the Sailor Starlights,) and among the announcements alongside ‘we’re not changing the names’ and ‘yes, all 200 episodes’ was ‘Sailors Uranus and Neptune will not be cousins.’ It wasn’t even the only example in the 90s Sailor Moon dub, but people don’t bring up the genderflips of Zoisite and Fish’s Eye as often because they’re much more ‘standard’ comparatively than ineptly changing every oblique hinting of romance to a very shoehorned COUSINS reference… and then still making them come off as a romantic couple because they didn’t cut, say, the ‘I like your hands’ scene, so instead we have incestuous lesbians. Fortunately, the Viz dub is WAY more competent in all respects, plus they released a pretty good subbed version.

Speaking of OG Anime Lesbians, Kunihiko Ikuhara, and 90s dubs, man do I wish Nozomi would do a redub of Revolutionary Girl Utena one of these days that’s not… adding to the surrealism of Utena. (Apparently they were not particularly SUCCESSFUL at toning down the blatant queerness of RGU, and towards the end the translators had clearly gotten deeply invested, but it’s still deeply clunky and 90s and Sarazanmai’s excellent dub proves that a good Ikuhara dub CAN be done and enhances the experience.) I’m glad that one’s more widely available now, though - I remember hearing about the show as this seminal work of Anime Lesbians as a teen and it not being watchable anywhere. Now it’s on Youtube and Crunchyroll.
