I had a hard time coming up with a title for this thread tbh.
My main question is this: what musician/group do you like that not many others seem to appreciate as much as you do (or even know about)?

For me it's definitely Bruce Hornsby & the Range. If you're a fan of 80s music you've likely heard his song "The Way It Is", cause it's the only song of his which I've personally ever heard on the radio (I may have heard one other song, but I've never heard any other one on a "Top 40" station). But he's put out a lot of great music with The Range, even though they only published three albums together.

I discovered their music way back in 2011 with the aforementioned song and I've loved it ever since. Their music has a cozy pop/soft rock vibe that is reminiscent of a simpler, more free life. Yet a lot of their songs also tackle many political issues which target the working class and minorities ("The Way It Is" discusses the lives of those on welfare and those targeted by racism, and how, well... that's just the way it is). If you're wondering, the political messages aren't cringey or dated; if anything, they're still relevant 30-40 years later. Not all songs are political though, some are just cute little love songs and songs about reminiscing of a simpler time in their lives.

One of my favorite things about Bruce Hornsby is that he is a pianist, and quite an accomplished one. Since I myself am a pianist I was drawn to his music and always wanted to figure out how to play it on my own (he's really good at improvisation and jazz-like chords so it can be tricky to figure out). Even now, as I'm about to graduate with a Bachelor's Degree in music, I still appreciate his skill and musicianship so much. I recently made a mix CD of my favorite songs by him and they've actually really been helping me cope with depression a great deal. Even though the songs can often have a sad message the music itself always manages to make me feel so much better.

So the reason why I'm asking this question is because I literally have never met another person in my life who even knows about Bruce Hornsby (& the Range) beyond that one song. I feel like he is a criminally underrated 80s gem and deserves a lot more attention than he gets. I wish I could get others to appreciate him as much as I do.

I actually recently discovered this one and I just adore it //
This one is about corporate greed and pollution and how it's destroying the lives of common workers. powerful stuff.
A song about a girl who left her hometown in search of a better life and came back with little success. we still believe in her though :)
This one just has a sad vibe to it, the main line says "still, without you, the show goes on." the lyrics are sad but the music is really great.

Hmmm I don't know just how unknown they are, but I've never seen anyone else talk about the band Mimicking Birds, or the band Devics. Both of the alternative music type, I think. Would recommend

Does it have to be an “official” musician or band? Because if not I’ve really enjoyed listening to Studio Yuraki’s covers on YouTube over the past couple years. Really glad I found them as they do covers for what I’m interested in: anime. They’re severely underrated as a channel based on the quality of what they produce. In particular, these are my two favorite pieces they’ve done.

Will Wood comes to mind. I randomly discovered them due to the Youtube algorithm and I'm absolutely taken with their music. I've listen to them since their Self-ish album some years ago, I think they've gotten slightly more popular though, due to Tiktok taking one of the songs from their 2020 album. Not sure what genre you'd call their stuff, but wikipedia is calling them an advent-pop artist.

Not sure if I can link any of them due to swear words, but if curious, the first song I listened to was Mr. Capgras Encounters a Secondhand Vanity. My favorite in the newest album is l/Me/MyseIf.

Will Wood and the Tapeworms like NefariousKing said are really good. Will Wood even made some music for an upcoming podcast and this is probably my favorite song from it right now.

Uh, also maybe Good Kid, The Real Zebos, Teddy Hyde, and Merlin I think aren't super well known?

Good Kid makes songs I think of as summer road-trip jams. They also have a little game on itch.io which has 8bit versions of their songs.
The Real Zebos, I most listen to Rock Star Skinny and Your Ex Said You Can't Dance.
Teddy Hyde seems to do more love-song types, at least in the Sock-Footed album. Here's a funkier one and here's a calmer(?) one.
I haven't listened to all of Merlin's songs yet but I think Red Eyes, Pt. 2 and Hey are good for sure.
Sharing music is fun lol

Does Starset count? Idk if they're popular or not. I canw across the band while listening to rock songs and YouTube. It was just somethin YouTube reccomended to me. I've listened to all of their songs and not a single one of them is bad (imo). There are ones that I like more that others, but all of them are really good.

Also I like a song by Will Wood and the Tapeworms, thou I can't remember the title now.

The Sundays-An English band that made three albums in the 90's.I'm not sure how to describe their sound but I think folk pop might fit.Their last record came out in 1997 and then they just stopped being a band but never announced an official breakup.

Sing-Sing was a British duo featuring Lisa O'Neill(not the Irish folk singer) and Emma Anderson formerly of Lush. They had a unique, eclectic sound that could have come from several eras of music.

Nick Drake was an amazing singer songwriter who died at a very young age years before his music was finally appreciated by the general public. He had his own sound and is probably the best acoustic guitar player I've ever heard.
