I've not played fire emblem heroes, but i'm skeptical on if its worth it or not. Would you guys recommend it to newcomers of the game?

I'm not sure if you've tried out the game at this point since no one responded to you about this on here. To me... It's hard to say whether or not that I would recommend the game to newcomers. This is something that I personally think you have to decide on your own about that issue. 'Cause I don't know what makes you skeptical of the game is worth it or not since you haven't mentioned it.

Thank you for responding. Ah I downloaded the game then was distracted completely from playing it. :S The reason for my skepticism is that would I not be able to obtain characters from my choosing, looking at all of the characters is super cool like Grima robin. If its decided on what units i obtain through a random element like loot boxes. Then I would spend ages grinding away. Not to mention the star rating. I'd be super bummed out if I unlocked a character I like and its a 1 star.

I will be playing it later, but that's the reason for my skepticism.

It's a fun game, I have played since launch.

But I would advice care with getting into any type of free to play mobile game.

Honestly I wouldn't recommend any F2P mobile game to anyone. But at least this is a good one.

About your concern of getting the characters you want, it's pretty easy to get the characters you want with a little patience, even though it depends on your luck.

Lower star characters can be upgraded to five stars. Notice that still not all 5 star characters are equal, there are some "six star" characters in disguise (they are five stars but basically six stars). These would be "legendary heroes" that have the pair up mechanic (older legendaries don't have this), "mythic heroes" (all) and "duo heroes".

Mhm... I see. :T I understand your skepticism when it comes to that. It would be great to able to choose the units we want instead of it being at random. Getting the characters you want may take a while, but there are some units that you can get for free while waiting for those characters. Like you can get a free Choose Your Legends 2 unit (I think this one is still available. Not sure...), a free Choose Your Legends 3 Unit, and there some Reward Units that you can get. Also... If you have Fire Emblem: Three Houses then I believe you can get a free Male Byleth. Not sure how that works since I don't have a Nintendo Switch or Fire Emblem: Three Houses.

Though... The lowest star rating you can get when you summon a hero from a banner is a 3-star, so you don't have to worry about getting a 1-star unit at all. Like Flyffel has stated... You can easily promote a lower star character once you have the right amount of materials.

i'm not really sure. i played this at launch and quit before the adrift banner (about oct 2018) i guess it depends on how much you care about being on top, because good lord there is so much powercreep that it isn't worth investing into. people praise this game for having good rates compared to other gacha games but they seem to forget about the IV system and how your goal is to pull another 10 of the same unit to stay on top. it is more f2p friendly compared to other gachas though, there are a lot of units that are pretty great in the 3 star pool and it's not hard to +10 them with enough time but the appeal is to get the more powerful 5 stars which often powercreeps a unit that once powercreeped someone else, and the really dumb ones that are advertised to be pulled for skills that affect aether raids and arena to sacrifice to a unit you like, which will waste more of your resources. if you want one of your heroes to be great you'll probably have to summon at least a couple of 5 star units for their unique skills to give away. what also really sucks is the amount of alts they shill out instead of new characters which should've been their main priority in the first place. again i haven't played for a long time but i'm betting money that half of the cast are alts by now. i'm pretty sure red orb hell is still a thing, there are a bunch of off-focus units that desperately need downgrading in there (in all colours really, but it's much, much worse in red) and there's a good chance you'll pull something mediocre and off-focus instead of the unit you want. they haven't done anything significant about the summoning pool for a long time. it is a little better in legendary banners if you saved up and liked all 3 units in one colour, but it still can be frustrating. the story is sub-par too, it was ok in the first chapter and it was awful in the second. idk about the third chapter.

tl;dr if you're happy with the f2p units you get and the core gameplay and modes are fun to you then give it a shot, the game is very cute and charming but it will be difficult to keep up with if you want to invest more into it, especially since you're new, the rates are kinda sketchy and the powercreep is real

It's definitely possible for a long time player to be "competitive" without spending any money, but all that stuff is none of a starting player's concern.

Intelligent Systems has gotten better with adding less popular characters in the past months as now every new hero banner they are adding one new unit directly into the 3 and 4 star summoning pool. And you get two free unique characters every month (one free seasonally dressed 5 star from the Tempest Trials event and one new 4 star from Grand Hero Battles.)

I still advise caution with starting any F2P game - they screw with your mind in ways that I don't consider healthy. But this game already has me, haha.

It sounds alright, I wouldn't want to be competitive because that's where the players who has spent money would completely destroy me. I just want to make a rad team with the characters I like : )

Same I am very skeptical of free to play games. Although a very good one which I would definitively recommend is Fallout shelter. I haven't spent anything on it and I played that on and off for about a year (Though haven't played it since)

Ah that's nice about the male byleth. He's going to be carrying my team so hard at the start :) I see so when I eventually obtain the characters i want I can just upgrade them. I suppose the grinding to obtain the ones you want feed into the game-play loop.

Where do you find out about these events/offers, are they advertised in game?

I can imagine the competitive aspect of the game to be super cheesy. Where units have perks and set ups that exploit mechanics. You should see how broken fire emblem fates online battles are. :S

What do you mean by power creep, is that a term for characters to have the potential to be broken?

I believe you with the alts, i saw some of them. Who knew celebrating Easter and Christmas was so sexy? XD They even have a fisher Frederick where he attacks with a fishing net...

I wouldn't say it's "good" for a f2p game, heck even PC and probably whatnot out there is better. I mean if you like the franchise(FE), sure go and get it. I played before with some hiatus inbetween and the fact how dumb the merging is(+10) and you basically need those for arena progress unless they made that worse. And yeah gacha is not good, considering how much you need to merge and get prefect IVs as mentioned above I'd rather just play any other FE or SRPG game if that's what you are after(just get something for a video game console or if stuff is on PC as well that I dunno)

You can just merge units that are available at 3 stars if you want to rank high in arena, it's not gated behind money, just play time (as it should be).

yeah but you still need em higher level to play good anyway due to ****ty matchup sometimes lol

Yes. They're advertised in the game. There's a notification bulletin board that tells you of current and past events of the game so far. It is not hard to find the notification bulletin board once you start playing the game. :]

I say give it a try, gacha games have a lot of issues but the bright side to them is that they're free to play. Ryumia already covered it but you can get some strong enough units at the start that ought to make playing through the game a lot less difficult.

I imagine if theres one obstacle for new players it'd be resources. I've played the game since launch so I've got excess of just about everything, but for a new player it'll probably take you awhile before you build up a good stockpile of feathers, refining stones, etc. Even something as basic as stamina potions might take a bit to build up to the point where you can just use 'em without a second thought.
