I really wanna start a new video game and Fire Emblem seems to be really popular, so I wanna join in. But I don't know which game to start first, I know the newest games are Birthright and Conquest but theres also Awakening and maybe some I missed. Which game do I play if I want to start out and get into the series?

i'd say the newer games, and then go back and play awakening if you enjoyed it. i warn you, fe is a deep dark hole. if you jump into it , it won't be fun. anyways, i think playing the newer games and coming back to the older ones is good. trust me.

Thanks! I'll probably order Birthrights tonight then!

yeah, fire emblem is a good series!! play the newer ones first; you'll come to respect and enjoy the older ones then. (it's what I did)

I would recommend you start with Awakening because it's a lot less dark then the Fates games and it isn't as hard as Conquest. The plot isn't as good as Fates, but Awakening gives you a good feel to actually getting the dynamics of the game imo. however, it is solely up to you to decide which game you want to try first!!

The older games are more about strategy, whilst the newer games aren't so much. (depending on the difficulty) If you want a series that allows you to marry your 'waifus' and 'husbandos' or whatever the kids say these days, then fire emblem is for you. The later versions are, at least. (^; They still have the option to plan strategically, but it's limited, again, depending on your chosen difficulty.

The fandom isn't that bad, which is good. However, I've been a part of the 'Hetalia' and 'Attack on Titan' fandoms so really, anything is better than them imo. Honestly, it's a good game overall, and I suggest you get it if you like to think a little with your gaming experience. uvu

can't comment on which one you should get first, though that seems like something you've already figured out, but i am a new fe player and decided to get birthright for my very first game. for some reason, i feel like it took me a while (and is still taking me time) to learn the mechanics of the game; there are just honestly so many details imo. it's pretty easy on casual though, so you won't have a problem progressing especially if you're interested in the story aspect. i think that also helps with learning as well. anyway, i'm sort of in love with series already with just having played (and not even finishing) one of the games, so i hope you have fun discovering this world too~

I think Awakening is Good play to start because if you like the play style in it they you will like Birthright, if you dont then you should get Conquest
that way you dont buy something your not huge about play style wise. if your just after story will nvm you can't go wrong either way.

Start with either of the new Fates one really, I recently played some of Awakening and while I like the story I think Birthright/Conquest/Revelations have way better fighting mechanics and story in general. I myself prefer Conquest though.

I actually just started playing FE this spring. I started with Path of Radiance and now I'm playing Radiant Dawn, its sequel. I found both games really easy to get into. They are older games, though. PoR is for Game Cube and RD is for Wii. I also received Conquest for my birthday a few weeks ago. I haven't tried it yet, but I'm looking forward to playing it. It's kinda disappointing to hear that the newer games are less about strategy, but I enjoy marrying husbandos, so I guess it should be good. ;) If only it was possible to marry Tibarn in the older games. He's my fave! <3 Anyway, hope you end up enjoying FE! :)

If Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn weren't so expensive and hard to come by, I would recommend those like the person above. That being the case, they're not what you should seek out to start with. There's no sense in spending upwards of $60 on something you don't know whether you'll even like.

When it comes to these threads popping up asking about which games to start with, I tend to stick with recommending Fire Emblem and Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones. Both can be found on the Wii U eShop, and they're Game Boy Advance Virtual Console games. They're both $7.99 (or whatever your equivalent to that is if you live outside the US).

The game I listed simply as Fire Emblem is alternatively known as Fire Emblem: Rekka no Ken/Fire Emblem: Blazing Sword, or Fire Emblem 7. As you can guess, it's the 7th game in the series, but it was the first game in the series released outside of Japan, thus why it's known simply as Fire Emblem. Being the first international release for the series, it includes tutorials that will help you to understand the gameplay mechanics. It also has a pretty good story, something which Awakening and the Fates games lack.

Somewhat similar to the Fates games, FE 7 has different paths depending on which Lord you pick. The main path follows Eliwood as the main lord and is a bit easier. Another path features Hector as the main lord and is a bit more challenging than Eliwood's path.

Meanwhile, Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones is one of the easiest games in the series and probably held that title until Awakening. It is similar to Awakening in that you walk around a map and occasionally battle monsters to grind up levels. (Meanwhile, in the other games, instead of traversing a map you simply end up in the next location by story progression. You can grind in some of those games, but not all of them, and do so in a designated building called the Arena.) Due to its simplicity compared to the rest of the games and its price point, it's hard to not recommend to a newcomer.

I can't in good conscience recommend Awakening or Fates as part of what I like about this series is the characters and stories in the games. Actual decent storytelling took a backseat to time travel, husbandos, waifus, and nonsensical children from the future. I doubly cannot recommend them as the map design in Awakening is atrocious by series standards and, while Conquest brings back some challenge, Fates overall changed numerous gameplay mechanics that were part of the series for 25 years. If the only thing that interests you is the whole waifu thing, it shouldn't be hard to find much better elsewhere.

Given the dates of your posts, at this point you've probably already purchased Birthright. Nonetheless, I highly recommend the older installments in the series because they're far more interesting tactics games. If nothing else, Fire Emblem and Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones would serve as good bridges for you to make your transition into the older games as simple as possible.

Finally, as someone who started with the older games, don't let all the talk of the difficulty of the older games scare you off outright. This is overblown, especially by people who have never actually bothered to play the older games and who probably aren't suited to strategy games in the first place. You can jump into nearly any of the games and get the hang of it.

For some reason I didn't realize there were GBA FE games in the Wii U eshop. I'm definitely gonna check those out at some point. And you're right about the two games I mentioned being expensive. At the last con I attended, I saw them each selling for the best part of $100. :/ If my siblings hadn't received them when they first came out, I probably wouldn't have had the opportunity to play them. Oh, and I love your avvie! :)

I'd recommend Awakening or FE7 to get into Fire Emblem. Birthright might be too easy and Conquest too difficult, but Awakening is still pretty accessible atm.
