Fishing pole doesn't break at tournament.

I've played every fishing tournament so far. I go through a ton of poles every time. Today however, I was working hard to get certain items, so I played for a couple of hours. My pole wouldn't break.
I switched to a flimsy rod and caught over 50 fish. Still didn't break.

Nintendo must have done this with the last update. Did anyone else notice this at last week's tournament?

This was always the case even before the last update. Your rod will never break during a round, but it can break if you catch a fish and time expires before the animation finishes.

I guess my memories failing me. I remember my rod breaking quite a few times during the tournament while playing the 3 minute rounds. I must be mistaken.

I'm pretty sure it was always that rods never break during a round, or at least it that was part of an update very early as I know I have never broken a rod during a round for the last few tournaments. Your rod durability decreases during a round, but if it's at 1 durability left, it won't break until time expires. You may go through a lot of rods during a tournament if you are trying to take advantage of every last second and keep catching fish right before time expires. I usually stop trying to catch fish when there are about 15 seconds left because by then there is a good chance I won't be able to reel the fish in and finish the animation before time expires. Maybe this last tournament you got lucky and didn't reel in any fish with under 10 seconds left which would cause your rod to break.

Same with nets during the bug-offs! I'm really glad they thought of this otherwise it would be pretty annoying to do tourneys.

I also think shovels don't break until you're finished completely hitting a rock. I've never had a shovel break until after I got 8 things from a rock. But I'm not sure on this one

From what I recall, the rods never broke during the tourney (that would be rather unfair). BUT, I do know that if you're in the middle of catching a fish when the timer runs out, and you're too late, it will break since the tourney finished even if you started wrestling with it beforehand. Maybe this is what happened to you?

I will have to test this one today. That would be so stress and anxiety relieving if so.

I just completed some extensive testing. It seems the shovel is 100% impervious to breakage while hitting rocks for resources. Your shovel will not break unless you hit a dead rock. If you hit the rock a 9th time or after the resource timer depletes, it will break.

If your shovel is one use away from breakage, you may hit every rock in town safely. Which means, you can set aside a shovel for rocks, and it should last a lifetime.
