Fishing tourney: frugal tip - save money on fishing rods

I don't know if this has been mentioned, but for those not wanting to waste the durability of more expensive rods during the tourney, I noticed last time that as long as you don't catch a fish as time expires, your flimsy rod will never break. Durability goes down, but as long as you only use it during competition and never catch a fish as time expires it doesn't break. Unless they patched this.
