I had not used the thumbs up function before today, but thought I would give it a try. It was going along fine until I clicked on one and it became a thumbs down. I tried ti figure ou what had gone wrong and I think I gave it a thumbs-up before it returned to a thumbs-down once again. I did not touch the thing again after that. What did I do there. Is there any way to fix what I did? I would hate to have a helpful poster be saddled with an erroneous thumbs-down.

It just tells you that you liked it, and it shows a thumbs down. It doesn't mean you disliked the post :)

What you're seeing is the normal icon that shows up after you click the Like button. After you "like" something, the thumbs up that was there previously becomes a thumbs down which I assume is to indicate that you've already liked that particular post. There actually isn't an option to dislike something or downvote it (though many forums have this option so I can see why it'd be a bit confusing), so you definitely didn't do anything wrong or give someone an erroneous dislike! You can also see all of the posts you've liked by viewing your profile and clicking on the "Post Thanks/Like" tab.

Hopefully that makes sense and gives you some peace of mind that you didn't smear someone's otherwise good post. :)

Oh, thank you both. That gives me peace of mind. All I could think at that time was , "What have I done?" How nice that there is no actual thumbs down.

If you click the thumbs down icon it simply removes the like (that you've already given) from the post.
