Pokémon Friends disappeared from the Friends Bar on my AS game

Is this a mechanic that just happens if no one is online for a while or what? I had like 10 friends in my Friends bar, and then after a while I started wondering where they went when I logged into my PSS. It's not that big a deal, but just want to know if they'll come back at some point, just because I don't feel like having to meet them all over again. Oh and note: I didn't move the cartridge from one 3DS to another. My friends just simply disappeared from the bar. I go online and they still aren't there. Just want to know if they'll come back or not (please say they will...) and if this is just natural, since I haven't been on PSS in a while.

If I stick to a game always in the same 3DS (as I have 2) I've had friends stay in my game for months or longer so I'm not sure why you lost yours. :/

Only time I've lost my friends is switching the game to my other 3DS or letting a friend of mine put my game in her 3DS. It's super annoying and I wish they'd just stay.

Yeah, I don't know why it's doing that. I hope it wil reset when I play with my cousins or something. Don't feel like going back to every person and asking them to add me.
